SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Freshman Sam McBain (Faribault, Minn. put her name in the Concordia (6-9, 5-6 NSIC) book in dramatic fashion scoring on a corner kick in the 78th minute, helping CU to a 3-1 win over Northern State (4-13, 1-10 NSIC). Amanda Olsen (Cottage Grove, Minn.) and Brittany Kapala (Fridley, Minn.) also had goals in the win. BOX SCORE
The Golden Bears fell behind early as Northern State got on board with a goal in the ninth minute. Olsen had a shot denied on a brilliant save by NSU keeper Shaina Stein before she put CU on the board in the 30th minute of play. Chloe Moore (Lakeville, Minn.) had a long throw in that was headed by Arielle Stimson (Lakeville, Minn.), after the ball deflected off a NSU defender, Olsen did the rest. Olsen had gathered the ball on the right side of the box and then buried it in the back of the net. The score remained 1-1 half.
The second half was not as action packed in the early going as neither team had any great chances. In the 78th minute McBain went to the far side of the field to take a CU corner. She used her right foot to bend it in the box. The ball got through everyone in the box and over Stein. The ball rolled into the far post and in the net for a rare goal directly off a corner. CU got more breathing room in the 79th minute as Kay Smith (DeKalb, Ill.) sent a ball in off a corner that hit the feet of Kapala. After it deflected off Kapala it bounced through the defense and in the back of the net giving CU a 3-1 win. The Golden Bears got a good effort from Sarah Pieper (New Brighton, Minn.) as well on Sunday afternoon as she was around the ball offensively all day.
Concordia now has 15 points in the NSIC and are tied with Upper Iowa for eighth place. CU will be on the road next weekend at Augustana and Wayne State as they battle for a spot in the NSIC Tournament.
