concordia-st. Paul (2-5, 1-3 nsic) dropped a 20-18 road loss to msu moorhead (3-4, 1-4 nsic) on saturday afternoon at alex nemzek stadium in moorhead, minn. Junior quarterback kole goodchild (left) had his finest performance as he completed 26-44 for 317 yards and three touchdowns with just one interception while leading the bears with 38 rushing yards. Senior linebacker brad scherer (right)recorded a career-high 17 tackles to lead the defense.
the golden bears never led in the game and were burned by not converting any of their three extra point or two point conversion attempts. Cu scored with just over three minutes to play when goodchild hit tight end eric tonkin (left)for a seven yard scoring strike. The two point conversion pass attempt failed, however and the dragons ran out the clock on the bears, converting a third down and six with an 11 yard pass completion.
junior wide receiver antwon williams (right)hauled in two of the three touchdown passes from goodchild. The first was a seven yard td with one second to play in the first half with the second coming midway through the third quarter from 25 yards. Williams finished the game with a team-high eight receptions for 93 yards.
also having big receiving days were sophomore tyrone ruffin, who had seven receptions for 84 yards and seniorjason simmons with four catches for 93 yards. Goodchild completed passes to seven different receivers and spread it out to four players with at least four receptions as senior cecil elekwachi added four receptions for 31 yards.
the cu ground game couldn't get into a rhythm, finishing with 21 rushes for 59 yards as a team, led by goodchild's 38 yards on 10 attempts. Senior aaron cawthorn added eight carries for 27 yards.
the bears, who hadn't given up over 100 rushing yards since the second week of the season, allowed the dragons to rush for 149 yards on 28 attempts.
cu outgained the dragons 376 to 372 in the game and posted their first two interception game with freshman rojeer wright (left)and senior antonio brown nabbing the picks for cu. Wright and senior defensive tackle eric power each recorded a sack and two tackles for loss in the game.
the golden bears will look to snap their three game losing streak next saturday, oct. 21 when they travel to take on upper iowa at 1:00 in fayette, iowa.
