Defense racks up 8 sacks as CSP crushes UMC, 36-13

The Golden Bears (5-2, 2-1 NSIC) won their second straight NSIC game following their 36-13 road victory over Minnesota Crookston Saturday afternoon. The Bears eclipsed 200 team rushing yards for the second consecutive week, running for 258 yards on 43 team carries. The pass defense had perhaps their best effort of the season, holding the Golden Eagles to just 7-of-28 for 52 yards and an interception. The pass rush was fierce, sacking the UMC quarterbacks eight times while also recording 12 tackles for loss for a total of 55 yards.

Concordia, who usually relies on a potent offense combined with a playmaking defense, beat UMC using ball control and shutdown defense. Three Bears had rushing touchdowns starting in the first quarter when Sam Blocker plowed in from one yard out to cap off a 10 play, 59-yard drive covering 4:21 to give Concordia an early 7-0 lead with just over five minutes remaining in the first quarter.

The Bears piled up 20 second-quarter points as they sprinted out to a 27-7 lead at the half. Aaron Cawthorn scored the first of the three second-quarter touchdowns from four yards out just 29 seconds into the quarter.

After a Minnesota Crookston touchdown, Wesley Hill took back a punt 54 yards with 4:15 remaining in the half. Then, with only 29 seconds on the clock, James McNear hit Montez Bridgeforth for a ten-yard touchdown strike to close out the scoring for the half.

A third-quarter field goal by Brody Johnson and a Brian Holmes 12-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter capped off the scoring for the Bears, with UMC adding a touchdown in-between.

Blocker led a balanced CSP rushing attack, carrying the ball 14 times for a team-high 74 yards to go with his touchdown. Cawthorn showed his explosiveness with nine carries for 71 yards while breaking off a team-long run of 40 yards. Holmes finished with five carries, 52 yards for an average of 10.2 yards per carry. McNear also did some damage on the ground, as he carried the ball eight times for 46 yards.

Through the air, McNear was 13-of-23 for 128 yards and the touchdown. Hill was the leading target, hauling in six passes for 61 yards along with six punt returns for 113 yards and his 54-yard touchdown return.

On defense, linebacker Doug Cox continued his outstanding play with ten tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and a pair of sacks - all team highs for Concordia. Two other Bears, linebacker Brian Doyle and defensive tackle Brandon Sullivan, also recorded two sacks.

on Saturday, October 16, the Bears host the Dragons of MSU Moorhead on Concordia's Homecoming weekend.
