Concordia's fourth-quarter comeback efforts fell short as they lost to Wayne State 28-25 October 23rd in Wayne, Neb. With the loss, the Golden Bears dropped to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the NSIC.
After a scoreless first quarter, both offenses broke out in the second quarter. The Bears opened the scoring early in the quarter when
Montez Bridgeforth broke a 40-yard run for a touchdown. Wayne St. answered back with scores on consecutive possessions to take the lead 14-7.
James McNear found
Wesley Hill for a 15-yard touchdown pass with just over 5 minutes remaining in the half, but missed the extra point which would prove to be costly as the Bears trailed 14-13. The Wildcats scored once more before the half on a 13-yard touchdown pass to Jake Robinson, bringing the score to 21-13 going into the break.
Wayne St. started the second half where they left off when Wildcats running back Zach Molacek scored on a 30-yard run, widening their lead to 28-13. Concordia began their rally with a four-yard touchdown plunge by
Brian Holmes but failed to convert the two-point conversion and trailed 28-19. Just over a minute later, Golden Bears defensive lineman
Matt Ledbetter intercepted a pass from Wayne St. quarterback Brett Edwards and returned it 20 yards for the score. Another failed two-point conversion left the Bears trailing 28-25 with 5:44 to play. The Bolden Bears had a chance to win the game and moved the ball to the Wayne State 36-yard line, but failed to convert on 4th and 16 when James McNear was sacked, ending the hopes of last-second victory.
James McNear ended the day with 151 yards and a touchdown through the air and 27 yards rushing.
Montez Bridgeforth made the most of his work load as he took his only carry of the day 40 yards for a touchdown.
Wesley Hill ended the day with four receptions of 75 yards and a touchdown.
The Bears defense was led by
Jeremy Axel, who had 11 tackles. To go along with his interception returned for a touchdown,
Matt Ledbetter also had 2 tackles, including one sack.
