Johansen was promoted to defensive coordinator in March of 2011 after serving five years on the Concordia coaching staff working with the secondary.
In his first season at the helm of the defense, Johansen's unit led the Northern Sun with 2.1 sacks per game and 8.6 tackles for loss per game. They compiled the 15th-ranked defense nationally in tackling the ball carrier behind the line of scrimmage.
The 2010 season marked a successful campaign for the defense and specifically the secondary. The pass defense ranked 14th in the nation, averaging just 156.4 passing yards allowed per game while the coverage was solid enough to help the defensive front tally 39.0 sacks, 12th most in Division II. The defense also held opponents to 18.1 points per game, ranking 20th in the nation, while the total defense (311.3 ypg, 34th) and tackles for loss (7.6 tfl pg, 33rd) were also national players.
The result of the defensive success helped the team to a five-win turnaround, an 8-4 finish and the program's third Mineral Water Bowl appearance.
