Sam Cummings was hired as a full time assistant coach prior to the 2011 spring season and coaches the defensive line for the Golden Bears. He also handles special teams coordinator duties.
PRIOR COACHING EXPERIENCE
Cummings joins the Golden Bears after working three seasons with Minnesota State University, Mankato while helping the Mavericks to back-to-back NCAA Playoff appearances.
As a graduate assistant at MSU, Cummings worked with the defensive line and the running backs in the playoff seasons before shifting to a tight ends/tackles coaching position for the 2010 season.
He also worked closely with MSU's dynamic punt and kick return units, kickoff and punt coverage and field goal blocking on the special teams.
At MSU, he gained experience recruiting in North and South Dakota and Wisconsin.
His introduction to coaching came at his alma mater, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire where he worked as a student assistant with the linebackers in the 2008 spring season.
PLAYING DAYS
While at UWEC, Cummings was named the team defensive MVP in 2006 and 2007, was team captain as a senior and was actively involved as a SAAC member. He is a three-time All-WIAC linebacker (2005-07) and helped UWEC to a 2007 NCAA Playoff appearance.
EDUCATION
He earned a bachelor of arts in criminal justice in 2008 at UWEC and completed his master of arts in physical eduction: sports management from MSU in December of 2010.
