Jim Honsa joined the Concordia football coaching staff prior to the 2018 season to serve as running backs coach.
He brings nearly 30 years of coaching experience between the prep and college levels. After getting his start in coaching at his alma mater, Hamline University, in 1988 as an assistant offensive line coach, Honsa moved to the prep ranks for four years at White Bear Lake High School (1990-93) before a 13 year stretch at North (St. Paul) High School. With the Polars, Honsa spent his first four years working with ninth and tenth graders before earning a promotion to offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator (1998-00).
In 2001, Honsa started a six season run as head coach of the Polars and was named the Hamline University Alumni Coach of the Year in 2002 and Varsity Gold Outstanding Performance Coach in 2002. He helped the program to its best seasonal win-loss record in 30 years.
His work at North was a springboard for his college coaching career where he's been an assistant coach at Hamline University since 2007. With the Pipers, Honsa has coached nearly every positional group (TE, RB, DB, ST, K/P) including a special teams coordinator role as well as academic advising for his alma mater.
He earned his degree in political science (pre-law) from Hamline before earning a master's degree in K-12 curriculum and instruction at the University of St. Thomas in 1996.
Jim resides in Maplewood with his wife, Kay and their three daughters, Julie, Jennifer and Jolene.
