ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse team (4-9, 1-4 GLIAC) dropped a home contest to the Lakers of Grand Valley State (6-7, 5-0 GLIAC) by a score of 16-2 on Friday evening inside the Concordia Dome.
The Golden Bears offensive effort was led by goals from Shelby Hansen and Alayna Roehl, scoring their 16th and 18th respective goals of the season. Both Hansen and Roehl have scored in the last five straight games.
Grand Valley State came out ready to play and never looked back, starting the game on a 8-0 scoring run before Hansen broke through in the second quarter. Even turnovers from both sides gave Concordia offensive possession but a stellar Lakers defense had every answer.
GVSU finished the first half with a 10-1 lead and allowed just nine shots on goals, saving all but one. CSP allowed 14 shots on goal, making four saves.
The Golden Bear defense stepped up big in the third quarter, allowing a game-low two goals.
With a 12-1 lead the Lakers were going to play until the end, scoring a pair of goals to open the fourth quarter before Roehl scored to give the Navy and Gold their second goal of the game.
Two more goals for the White and Blue would give GVSU the 16-2 win.
Junior Marge Lucio earned her 10th start of the season in net where she made four saves to bring her season total to 63. Junior Erika Holm came in for relief during the second half where she made six saves to bring her season total to 28.
Leading the defense was Claire Flahaven and Natalie Brownfield who combined for eight ground balls, five caused turnovers and two draw controls.
Senior Susie Monson tallied five draw controls to bring her season total to 61 and freshman Shelby Marik notched a team-leading five shots with three coming on goal but was unable to find the net for the first time of her career.
As a team, both programs were even at 25 turnovers and 25 ground balls with Grand Valley State out-shooting the Golden Bears 28-23 and 26-16 on goal.
Concordia could not find their way to the offensive zone and were held to just 11-for-22 on clear attempts.
The Golden Bears will look to bounce back when they return to the Concordia Dome on Sunday to face the Panthers of Davenport. First-draw is scheduled for 12 p.m.
