Golden Bears earn crucial victory behind Hansen’s five goals

The junior recorded a career-high goal tally in the win

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse team (5-9, 2-4 GLIAC) earned a crucial victory by a score of 17-12 over the Panthers of Davenport (8-7, 2-4 GLIAC) on Sunday afternoon inside the Concordia Dome to stay competitive in the GLIAC standings.

Junior Shelby Hansen shined the brightest for the Golden Bears, marking a career-high day with five goals. She is now up to 21 goals this season, more than double her goal total through her first two seasons in the Navy and Gold. Hansen has all scored in all but one game this season.

Joining Hansen on the attack was freshman Shelby Marik who notched her ninth multi-goal game of the season, recording four goals to bring her season total 33.

Susie Monson, Sydney Smith and Alayna Roehl each added a pair of goals with Lauren Barnacle and Jayde Isaacson tallying one to mark the most goals in a game since the 17-6 victory over Saginaw earlier this season.

CSP is now 12-6 all-time against the Panthers and are 6-2 in their last eight match ups. Concordia has also won their last five straight home games against Davenport.

From the first-draw the Golden Bears showed a spark that the crowd had been waiting to see, never falling behind and capitalizing on offensive chances.

Marik scored the first goal of the game four minutes in to take an early lead on a man-up opportunity.

A shot clock violation by the Panthers gave the Navy and Gold possession four minutes later to which Marik capitalized with her second score of the day. She was assisted by Barnacle.

Barnacle won the ensuing draw control to quickly keep the momentum going for CSP. Just over one minute later Marik had scored her third goal of the day on a direct pass from Barnacle. This marked Barnacles first multi-assist game of her collegiate career.

With CSP on a 3-0 run, Davenport was quick to take a time out. The timeout proved successful as they scored on the next play to cut into the Concordia lead 3-1.

40-seconds later Alayna Roehl scored on a man-up chance to record her first goal of the game. The Panthers took advantage of a CSP penalty that followed to score a man-up free position goal to end the first quarter with a 4-1 CSP lead.

Hansen was quick to keep the offensive momentum going for Concordia and scored her first goal of the game 10 seconds into the second quarter with an assist from Roehl.

Davenport was not going to cave and put together their first back-to-back scoring of the day to break down the CSP lead 5-4.

A quick response from Monson to regain a two goal lead was quickly followed up by a second 2-0 run for DU to see the game tied for the first time.

The Golden Bears did not want to play a close game and created an offensive spark to go on a 4-0 run with goals from Smith, Marik, Roehl and Hansen to end the first half with a 10-6 lead.

Davenport came ready with a successful game plan in the third quarter, out-scoring Concordia 5-3 to see the game tied for the second time and the Navy and Gold regain the lead with help from Smith and Hansen once again. CSP held a 13-11 lead heading into the final quarter of play.

The fourth quarter was all CSP and the Panthers saw their chances run out. A trio of goals from the Golden Bears extended the Concordia lead 16-11 with just over nine minutes left to play. Monson added her second goal of the day to bring her season total to 25.

The freshman duo of Barnacle and Isaacson both notched their sixth and fourth respective goals of the season.

Both teams traded one more goal to give Concordia the 17-12 victory, snapping a four-game skid.

Junior goalkeeper Erika Holm saw her best game of the season, earning her third win of the year behind eight saves in a full 60-minute outing. She is now up to 42 saves this season and is 3-1 while in the net.

The junior also picked up five ground balls to help get the ball back in the hands of the Golden Bears throughout the contest.

Joining Holm on the defense was Natlaie Brownfield and Claire Flahaven. Brownfield gathered five ground balls while Flahven picked up one and recorded a team-high three caused turnovers.

The Navy and Gold won 18 draw controls, their second highest of the season with four each from Flahaven, Marik and Monson.

As a team, the Navy and Gold tallied 30 shots on goal, 20 ground balls and 13 successful clears. Davenport was held to 20 shots on goal and committed 25 turnovers.

The Golden Bears will hit the road next weekend looking to keep the momentum going when they travel to University Center, Mich. to face the Cardinals of Saginaw Valley State in their final road regular-season game of the season. First draw is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT at Braddock Field.
