Golden Bears drop series finale against Jimmies

CSP and UJ play to a 2-2 series draw

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Concordia-St. Paul baseball team (6-9) wrapped up its four-game series against Jamestown (5-13) with a single non-conference game on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Jimmies 11-0 in seven innings at Northeast Regional Park.

With the win, the Jimmies salvaged a 2-2 split of the four-game series, though Concordia took two of the three NSIC contests.

The Jimmies' bats found the ball early and often, collecting 14 hits and 11 runs across the game's seven innings. The runs came in bunches, as Jamestown scored five in the second, four in the third, and two in the fifth. UJ tallied three extra-base hits in the game, all three of them doubles.

The Golden Bear offense struggled to find a rhythm, tallying just three hits throughout the game. Sophomore right fielder Eric Berg was the first aboard for CSP with a single to right field in the bottom of the second inning, while freshman Davon Castro, who entered the game at catcher in the top of the sixth, logged the first hit of his collegiate career with a single to the shortstop in the bottom of the sixth.

Concordia's only extra-base hit of the game came in the bottom of the seventh, when junior Charlie Harms smacked a double down the left field line.

Nolan McCaffery pitched a complete game shutout for the Jimmies, allowing just three hits and one walk with seven strikeouts in seven full innings of work.

For Concordia, freshman Nolan Swenson got his first taste of action on the mound, striking out the side in the seventh inning. Fellow freshman Bennett Brathol also made the first appearance of his collegiate career, giving up three hits and a single earned run in three innings on the mound. Senior Christian Lindow was charged with the loss after allowing six hits and five runs with one strikeout in 1.2 innings pitched.

The Golden Bears will continue their spring trip over the next two days, facing Point Park (Pa.) on Tuesday in Davenport before taking on both Malone (Ohio) and No. 20 Rollins (Fla.) on Tuesday at Alfond Stadium in Winter Park, Fla.
