DAVENPORT, Fla. – Concordia-St. Paul (7-9) bounced back with a convincing 9-4 win over Point Park (5-5) on Monday morning at NorthEast Regional Park in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
The Golden Bears have one more day to compete in Central Florida, and will play a pair of games at Alfond Stadium in Winter Park on Tuesday, opening against Malone (Ohio) before facing #20 Rollins to close out the spring trip.
Concordia received strong pitching against Point Park as freshman left hander
Evan Newlander put together his second-straight strong start, working the first four innings while allowing a run on three hits with six strikeouts following his no-hit 4.2 inning start to open the trip last week.
Junior right handed reliever
Caden Carsen then worked the next four innings, a career-long outing for the two-sport athlete. Carsen allowed a run on two hits and a walk with three strikeouts against the 15 batters he faced on the day.
Concordia's lineup was led by
Charlie Harms who continues to enjoy the warmth of Central Florida, going 3-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run as he's hit safely in every game on the spring trip.
Eric Berg also had a multi-hit game, going 2-4 with a pair of runs. Freshman
Gus Berger jumped back in the extra-base hit column, going 1-2 with a triple, two walks, two runs and an RBI.
Will Husemann also produced an extra-base hit, going 1-2 with a double and a run.
Seven different players scored on the day and eight players registered a hit.
The Golden Bears scored in the first three innings and in five of the first six frames including a pair of 3-run innings, scoring three times in the second for a 4-1 lead and three more in the fifth to expand the lead to 8-1.
Manny Garcia took the loss for Point Park, allowing five runs (three earned) in 2.1 innings. He was one of five pitchers for Point Park, who also received a 2.1 inning outing from Zane Griffaton, who allowed three unearned runs.
Point Park's lineup produced five hits on the day, coming from five different bats with pinch-hitter Blake Ewing hitting a solo home run in the eighth inning as the lone extra-base hit.
