Golden Bears split to open Space Coast Spring Games

CSP slugged their way to a 8-0 win in game one, before falling 5-4 in game two.

VIERA, Fla. — The Concordia-St. Paul softball team (7-8, 0-0) opened up the Space Coast Spring Games with a split this afternoon. The CSP lineup slugged their way to an 8-0 win over Davis & Elkins (2-16, 0-0) in six innings this morning, before falling 5-4 in their second game of the day to Davenport (4-10, 0-0). 

Lily Burke led the way at the plate in game one, going 1-for-3, slugging her first home run of the season, a three run bomb that put CSP up 5-0, Burke also swiped one bag and scored two runs. Katie Klotz went 1-for-3 as well, notching her first homer of the season to get the Golden Bears on the board in second. Danni Sharum was 1-for-2 at the plate, drawing a walk and smacking a double, Ashlyn Peterson was 1-for-3 on the day with a triple. 

Tatum Dunlavy got the start in the circle in game one, tossing 6.0 innings, allowing zero earned runs and seven hits with two strikeouts, grabbing the win and improving to 2-4 on the season. 

Alexis Monty smacked her first home run of the season, going 1-for-3 at the plate with three RBI against Davenport. Riley Rosenthal was 1-for-3, with a double and a walk in game two and Bryleigh Dana went 1-f0r-3 with an RBI. 

Emmy Bowne got the start in game two, going 6.2 innings, giving up five earned runs and 12 hits with four punchouts, taking the loss and falling to 4-4 on the year. 

The Golden Bears are back in action at the Space Coast Games with a pair of games scheduled against Goldey-Beacom, with first pitch set for 1:30 p.m. and Roosevelt, with first pitch set for 6 p.m.

Game One: CSP 8, DEC 0 (6 Inn.) 

After holding the Senators scoreless in the opening two innings, the Golden Bears got on the board in the bottom half of the second courtesy of a Katie Klotz solo home run to center. 

CSP tacked on one more in the second on a Ashlyn Peterson triple to left, plating Gabby Martinez and putting Concordia up 2-0. 

With two on and two out in the fourth, Lily Burke broke things open with a three-run bomb to straight away left field, to make it a 5-0 Golden Bear lead. The Senators threatened with a pair of two out singles in the fifth, but Tatum Dunlavy worked out of trouble to preserve the five run lead.

Danni Sharum got things started in the bottom half of the fifth with a one out double down the left field line, Amanda Barnacle pinch ran and later came around to score on a Nora Brandt RBI bunt single. A Senator throwing error allowed another CSP run to score to open a 7-0 advantage. 

Abi Carter and Leah French walked to start the sixth, Paige Wyngaard came in to pinch hit and reached on a fielder's choice allowing Lily Burke to score from third to secure the 8-0 win. 

Game Two: CSP 4, DU 5 

Neither side was able to push a run across in the opening two innings, but CSP struck first in the third on a Alexis Monty three-run roundtripper to left center. 

Katie Klotz singled to left to open the fourth, later swiping third and coming around to score on a Bryleigh Dana RBI infield single to put the Golden Bears up by four. Chloe Parker put the Panthers on the board with a two run homer in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 4-2 ballgame. 

Davenport continued to claw back into it, scoring one run on three hits in the sixth to get back to within one. CSP threatened in the seventh getting the insurance run into scoring position on a Lily Burke stolen base, but couldn't cash in. 

The Panthers loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, working a pair of two out walks to score the tying and go ahead runs to win by a score of 5-4.
