Marik’s overtime heroics lead Golden Bears to victory over Cardinals

The freshman scored a career-high five goals in the win

LIBERTY, Mo.  - The Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse team (3-4, 0-0 GLIAC) earned a 14-13 overtime win over the Cardinals of William Jewell led by Shelby Marik on Friday afternoon at the Soccer/Lacrosse Field on the campus of WJC. 

The Golden Bears are now 3-0 all-time against the Cardinals and 2-0 in games played in Liberty, Mo. 

Freshman Shelby Marik was the shining star for the Golden Bears, scoring her first career overtime winning goal. Adding to her impressive day was a career-high five goals and four draw controls. 

Adding to the Navy and Gold's impressive offensive attack was senior Susie Monson who led the team with eight points, scoring four goals and four assists. 

Junior Shelby Hansen recorded her first hat-trick of the season, scoring three goals on three shot attempts. 

Rounding out the scoring effort for CSP was senior Sydney Smith who notched her first multi-goal game of the season. 

It was the Cardinals who got the scoring started in the first quarter, scoring just over 1:30 in to take an early lead before the Golden Bears responded 34 seconds later to even the score. Monson scored on a man-up opportunity, assisted by Hansen. 

A pair of goals for William Jewell would give the lead back to the Cardinals 3-1. Hansen added her second goal of the game to end the first quarter 3-2 in favor of WJC. 

The second quarter showed a competitive battle with the Navy and Gold striking to once again tie the game at 3-3. Back-to-back goals for Marik would see Concordia take their second lead of the game 4-3. 

A 3-0 run for William Jewell gave them back the lead 6-4 before back-to-back goals from Monson and Hansen would tie the game for the third time and end the quarter. 

Coming out from the Break the Golden Bears would see an offensive spark to regain the lead 8-6 with goals from Smith and Marik. 

Another pair of goals from the Cardinals would tie the game for the fourth time, with CSP striking fast to go up 9-8 late in the third quarter. 

The fourth quarter saw a total of nine combined goals, five for the Cardinals and four for the Golden Bears to end regulation in a 13-13 tie and send the game to overtime, marking CSP's first overtime game of the season. 

With one minute remaining in the first overtime quarter, Marik scored the game-winner to give Concordia the 14-13 win. 

The Navy and Gold went 4-4 on clear attempts and won 20-30 draw controls led by nine from Monson. The Cardinals held a sight shot advantage 27-25 and 13-12 on goal. 

Junior Erika Holm saw her third start of the season where she made three saves to bring her season total to 25. 

Adding to the defensive effort was Claire Flahaven who tallied four caused turnovers and six ground balls. 

The Golden Bears will return to the field on Sunday in Kansas City, Mo. to take on the Hawks of Rockhurst at Bourke Field. First draw is set for 11 a.m.
