KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse (3-5, 0-0 GLIAC) dropped a road contest 15-5 to the Hawks of Rockhurst on Saturday afternoon at Bourke Field.
Leading the Golden Bears effort was Susie Monson who recorded a team-leading three goals, marking her fourth hat-trick of the season and 19th of her career. Monson added three caused turnovers, three ground balls and two draw controls to round out her day.
On the defensive side, Claire Flahaven tallied a team-leading four caused turnovers bringing her season total to 18.
In the first quarter it was the Hawks that got on the board first with back-to-back goals to take an early 2-0 lead before Shelby Hansen broke through and got the Navy and Gold on the board.
Rockhurst would respond fast to Concordia's offensive attack and add two more goals to end the quarter with a 4-1 lead.
The Hawks picked up right where they left off to start the second quarter, scoring their fifth goal just under two minutes in.
The Golden Bears offense was determined to keep it close and would put together their first 2-0 run of the day. Monson and Shelby Marik scored back-to-back goals to cut into the RU deficit 5-3.
A good clear attempt for the Hawks would bring them to the offensive zone where they would add another score to extend their lead 6-3. A foul on Rockhurst would give Monson a free-position attempt which she would score on to bring the game within two at 6-4.
One more goal before the break would send the game to halftime in favor of the Hawks 7-4.
Coming out from the break, Rockhurst took the reins and never looked back, outscoring the Golden Bears 8-1 to put a comeback out of sight.
The defensive effort from the Hawks matched with the high-powered offensive attack took advantage of CSP mistakes to capitalize on the scoring side and give them the 15-5 win.
Junior Marge Lucio got her fifth start of the season in net where she made seven saves to bring her season total to 30.
Freshman Shelby Marik extended her point-streak to eight games, scoring at least one goal in each of them to make her mark early in her freshman campaign.
Junior Shelby Hansen scored a goal for the sixth straight game, totaling her 13th point of the season.
As a team, the Navy and Gold went 13-26 on clear attempts and won 6-of-22 draw controls. The Hawks out shot CSP 32-18 and forced 24 turnovers.
The Golden Bears will return to the field next weekend to start GLIAC play with the Cardinals of Saginaw Valley State inside the Concordia Dome on Sun, Mar. 22. First draw is scheduled for 12 p.m.
