Golden Bears drop two games to close out Top Gun Classic

CSP falls to 6-7 on the season after dropping two on Saturday in Kansas.

SHAWNEE, Kan. — The Concordia-St. Paul softball team (6-7, 0-0 NSIC) dropped both games to close out the Top Gun Midwest Classic. Falling to Missouri Western, 10-0 in six innings in game one, before dropping the second game of the afternoon, 6-2 to Northwest Missouri State. 

Nora Brandt went 1-for-3 with double and a walk in game one and Alexis Monty was 1-for-2 with a walk at the plate. 

In game two, Leah French came in to pinch hit and notched an RBI single, Ava Blake went 1-for-3 at the plate and Gabby Martinex went 1-for-3 with two runs scored. 

Emmy Bowne left the game in the first inning and took the loss, falling to 4-3. Abi Carter tossed 4.0 innings of relief, allowing three hits and one earned run, Mikayla Wigern came in a pitched 3.0 innings, giving up one earned run and two hits. 

The Golden Bears will now hit the road for their spring break trip at the Space Coast Spring Games in Melbourne, Fla. CSP opens the trip against Davis & Elkins on Thursday, Mar. 5 with first pitch slated for 9 a.m eastern time. 

Game One: CSP 0, MWSU 10 (6 Inn.) 

The Griffons got on the board first with a leadoff home run in the top of the second inning. Nora Beandt leadoff the bottom half of the inning with a double, Ashlyn Peterson later drew a walk but both runners ended up being stranded. 

MoWest broke it open in the third, loading the bases with no one out, plating a total of four runs in the inning to open up a 5-0 lead. 

Two more Griffons scored in the fourth to make it a 7-0 ballgame. The Golden Bears threatened in the fourth, loading the bases on three straight one one out singles, but were unable to cash in. 

CSP blanked MWSU in the fifth, and in the bottom half of the inning, Alexis Monty got things started with a leadoff single. 

In the sixth the Griffons plated three, taking a ten run lead. CSP failed to answer in the bottom half, dropping game one, 10-0.

Game Two: CSP 2, NWMSU 6

The Bearcats got on the board first, putting two runners on with no outs, scoring two runs on a pair of groundouts to go up 2-0 in the top of the first. 

Northwest Missouri tacked on another in the second to open up a 3-0 advantage. CSP got one back in the bottom of the third after Gabby Martinez reached on an error, advancing to second on a wild pitch and later coming around to score on a Riley Rosenthal RBI single. 

The Bearcats answered with one more in the top of the fourth to make it 4-1, adding on two more in the top of the sixth on an RBI single and an unearned run coming around to score on an error. 

Bryleigh Dana walked to start the seventh, followed by Paige Wyngaard notching her first career hit, to put two on with one out. The Golden Bears got one back on a Leah French RBI single, but CSP couldn't close the gap, falling 6-2.
