SHAWNEE, Kan. — The Concordia-St. Paul softball team opened play at the Top Gun Midwest Classic Friday afternoon. The Golden Bears dropped a pair of games to Maryville, 9-2, before falling to No. 23-ranked Pittsburg State, 3-0.
Riley Rosenthal was 2-for-3 at the plate in game one, driving in two runs and swiping one base. Katie Klotz went 2-for-2 on the day drawing one walk and Alexis Monty went 1-for-3 with a walk.
Tatum Dunlavy got the start in the circle, tossing 3.0 innings, giving up six hits and six earned runs to take the loss, falling to 1-3 on the season. Abi Carter tossed 4.0 innings in relief, allowing four hits and three earned runs.
In game two the Golden Bears managed just two hits at the plate, with Alexis Monty going 1-for-3 with a double and Nora Brandt going 1-for-3 as well.
Emmy Bowne got the start in game two, going 6.0 innings, allowing six hits and three earned runs with one punchout.
The Golden Bears are back in action at the Top Gun Classic tomorrow afternoon, with a pair of games against Missouri Western State, with first pitch set for 2:40 p.m. and Northwest Missouri State, slated to start at 5 p.m.
Game One: CSP 2, Maryville 9
The Saints struck for three runs on two hits in the opening inning, CSP answered in the bottom half with a Riley Rosenthal RBI single to center.
Maryville tacked on three more in the top of the second. Leading off the inning with a home run before opening up a 6-1 lead on a two RBI single to center. CSP answered yet again in the bottom half with a Riley Rosenthal RBI single to left.
In the top of the sixth Maryville tacked on two more, going up 8-1 on a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch. A second Saints homer in the seventh made it a 9-2 game, with CSP dropping the opening game of the tournament.
Game Two: CSP 0, PSU 3
The Golden Bears second game of the afternoon remained scoreless for the first two and a half innings, with the two teams combining for just two hits.
Alexis Monty roped a double to the left centerfield gap in the top of the first, advancing to third on a throwing error, but couldn't come around to score.
The Gorillas broke through in the bottom of the third, notching the game's first hit on a single to center before plating two runs on an RBI double to right center. Pittsburg State added on in the fourth, opening up a 3-0 lead on a sacrifice fly to center.
Nora Brandt legged out an infield single in the fifth. Pinch runner Amanda Barnacle swiped second, but the Golden Bears couldn't cash in stranding a runner in scoring position.
Danni Sharum drew a walk with one out in the seventh, but couldn't come around to score as the Golden Bears fell, 3-0.
