Golden Bears drop lone game of the day to Peacocks, 8-4

CSP tallied six hits and left seven runners on base in the loss.

ROSEMOUNT, Ill. — The Concordia-St. Paul softball team (4-3, 0-0 NSIC) dropped their lone game of the day to Upper Iowa (2-13, 0-0 GLVC) at the Lewis Dome Invitational 8-4. The Golden Bears surrendered three runs in the first inning and couldn't comeback, falling behind 6-1 at one point and dropping their first game of the tournament.

Katie Klotz went 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring two of the Golden Bears four runs. Ashlyn Peterson was 1-for-3 in the afternoon, driving in one run, Nora Brandt posted one hit and one RBI as well. Aexis Monty drew two walks and scored one run.

Emmy Bowne got the start in the circle and came away with her first loss of the season to fall to 3-1. The junior tossed 6.0 innings, giving up 10 hits and five earned runs, with three strikeouts. Skyler Lee threw one scoreless inning in relief.

A leadoff double, followed by a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly put the Peacocks on the board in the top of the first. With two on and two out a costly CSP throwing error allowed two more Upper Iowa runs to score to make it a 3-0 game.

Katie Klotz got things started in the second with a one out triple to right, later coming around to score on an Ava Blake sacrifice fly to center.

Upper Iowa answered in the top of the third, tacking on two more runs on a steal of home and an RBI infield single to make it a 5-1 game.

Alexi Monty worked a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the fourth, followed by Danni Sharum reaching on an error. Monty later stole third and came home on a throwing error. Nora Brandt lined a single to center, bringing home the pinch runner Amanda Barnacle to bring the Golden Bears back to within two.

With the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, the Peacocks plated another run on a sac fly. Adding to their lead in the seventh with back-to-back doubles, later going up 8-3 on a throwing error.

CSP put two on with nobody out in the fifth and Ashlyn Peterson lined a RBI two-bagger to center to make it an 8-4 game. But the Golden Bear couldn't close the gap, falling 8-4.

Defense was sloppy on both sides, with a total of seven errors being committed by both teams and a total of five unearned runs were scored. CSP managed six hits on the afternoon, leaving a total of seven runners on-base. The Peacocks racked up 10 hits on the afternoon and left four runners on base.

The Golden Bears will play two games at the Lewis Dome Invitational tomorrow afternoon, Feb. 21. CSP will take on Truman State, with first pitch slated for 9 a.m. followed by a game against Quincy with a start time of 11 a.m.
