13 Golden Bears score in season-opener rout of Timberwolves 21-2

Lauren Barnacle scored two goals and one assist in her collegiate debut

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse team (1-0, 0-0 GLIAC) opened their 2026 campaign with a 21-2 rout over the Timberwolves of Northwood at the Concordia Dome on Friday night.

The Golden Bears 21 goals scored is the most over a Division II institution since a 24-1 victory over Upper Iowa during the 2022 season.

13 players found the net in the victory for the most since last season's 20-2 victory over Saginaw Valley State where 14 players scored.

Each Golden Bear saw action in tonight's win, including all 12 freshmen with six newcomers recording a multi-point game.

Senior Susie Monson, the reigning GLIAC Midfielder of the year, picked up right where she left off, scoring her 16th career hat-trick. Monson added to her stellar day an assist, a team-leading four ground balls, three caused turnovers and eight draw controls.

Concordia was in the driver's seat from the first draw control and never looked back, taking an early 6-0 lead in the first quarter. Monson won the game's first draw control and went on to score the first goal of the day. She was assisted by freshman Brooklyn Hedberg, earning her first collegiate point.

Hedberg kept the momentum going and followed up with a goal of her own just over a minute later unassisted to extend the lead to 2-0.

The freshman class kept rolling and one minute later Shelby Marik saw her first collegiate goal also unassisted to put the Timberwolves backs against the wall early.

Juniors Shelby Hansen and Kayleign Nelson connected for the first time this season to go up 4-0. This was Hansen's 21st career goal for CSP. Just over four minutes later Hedberg scored her second goal of the game assisted by freshman Lauren Barnacle

Kaysawn Carlson scored the final goal of the first quarter unassisted to give Concordia a 6-0 lead heading into the second quarter.

The second quarter was all Golden Bears again, with CSP giving Northwood not one ounce of room to play. Freshman Alayna Roehl added her first collegiate goal followed by Monson's second of the game.

Barnacle wanted in on the goal action and quickly followed up with her first goal just 16 seconds later. A quick Monson draw control and the Golden Bears were back in scoring range, Hansen scored her second goal of the day 19 seconds later to extend the lead 10-0.

Morgan Haapala, Barnacle and freshman Kaitlyn Rossi each added a goal to finish the first half with a 13-0 Navy and Gold lead. Rossi's goal marked the fourth freshman goal of the game.

With all gas and no brakes, the second half was another Golden Bear domination party. Monson, Marik and Roehl each added another goal to extend the lead to 16-0.

Freshman Nora LeBlanc notched her first collegiate goal followed up quickly by freshman Mackenzie Moir to assert the freshman class as an integral part of this year's squad and end the third quarter 18-0 in favor of Concordia.

Sophomore Ella Brisbois earned her first collegiate point to start the fourth quarter, scoring just 12 seconds in.

At 12:05, the Timberwolves clawed past a CSP defender to score their first goal of the day to which junior Erin Chartier responded with a goal of her own.

Back-and-forth goals from both Northwood and Chartier would end the game 21-2 in favor of CSP and give Chartier her second career mult-goal game as a Golden Bear.

Marik led the team with six shots to set an early statement in the Navy and Gold.

Earning the first start of the season in net was sophomore Marge Lucio. She made one save in 45-minutes of action, earning the win before Erika Holm entered the net for the final quarter. Holm made three saves to wrap-up the night.

As a team, the Navy and Gold outshot the Timberwolves 38-7 and went 15-17 on clear attempts. NU committed 30 turnovers and went 8-21 on clear attempts.

The Golden Bears will return to home turf on Sunday to face the Saints of No. 6 Maryville at 12 p.m. in the Concordia Dome.
