Golden Bears suffer first loss to No. 6 Saints

Freshman Shelby Marik scored the lone-goal

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse team (1-1, 0-0 GLIAC) suffered their first loss of the season to the No. 6 Saints of Maryville 19-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Concordia Dome.

Freshman Shelby Marik was the lone-goal scorer for the Golden Bears, tallying her third of the season in just her second career game.

The Saints found their control early in the first quarter and never looked back, scoring just 17 seconds into the game. They would riffle off five goals to end the first quarter in their favor.

Concordia found themselves with early scoring chances but a stellar defensive performance from Maryville would have an answer each time.

The second quarter saw sparks from CSP but each one would be blown out by the Saints who forced 15 turnovers in the first half. Six more goals would give the Black and Red a 11-0 advantage late in the second quarter.

With 17 seconds left of the first half, Marik found the net to get the Golden Bears on the board and get some momentum going before the half. She was assisted by Shelby Hansen, marking her third point of the season and sixth career assist.

Coming out from the break, the Saints were firing on all cylinders and proceeded to score five more goals to take a 16-1 lead with Concorida having no answers.

CSP had a game-high seven shots and four shots on goal in the fourth quarter but were unable to get a score on the board.

Maryville would score three more goals to earn the 19-1 victory on Navy and Gold turf, outshooting the Golden Bears 27-10 on goal and holding CSP to just nine successful clear attempts. Both teams were even in draw controls with 11 each.

Marik and Susie Monson each notched a team-leading six shots with Marik recording four on goal. Monson won six draw controls to extend her program-lead to 228.

Hansen saw a team-leading three caused turnovers and three ground balls.

Marge Lucio got her second start of the season in net where she made five saves before Erika Holm came in for the second half and made three saves.

The Golden Bears will look to get back on track next Friday when they face the Flyers of Lewis at the Concordia Dome for their third non-conference game. Action is set to begin at 6 p.m. in St. Paul.
