Golden Bears head west for pair of pivotal NSIC matchups

CSP set to take on Sioux Falls Thursday and SMSU Saturday.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team is back on the road after wrapping up a 4-0 homestand with wins over Augustana and Wayne State over the weekend. The Golden Bears have now won nine in a row and 12 of their last 13 games. 

CSP will head west for their next two games, traveling to Sioux Falls on Thursday night, Feb. 12 to take on the Cougars, with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m. On Saturday, Feb. 14 the Golden Bears head to Marshall to take on Southwest Minnesota State, with the game slated to begin at 2 p.m. 

With the nine game win streak the Golden Bears record now sits at 17-6 overall and 13-5 in NSIC play. CSP is currently tied with UMary for third in the conference standings.

NSIC Standings Update 
Minnesota State claimed the South Division title and a share of the NSIC regular season title with a win over SMSU on Saturday. The Mavericks sit atop the conference standings with a 24-0 overall record and 18-0 record in conference play. 

The Golden Bears currently sit in a tie for third place with UMary and one game behind Minnesota Duluth for second place in the conference. Maintaining a top four spot in the standings is key as the top four seeds get a first round bye in the NSIC Tournament. 

Winona State sits one game behind CSP currently with a 12-6 conference record, SMSU is in fifth place two games behind CSP with a 11-7 conference record. 

Last Time Out 
The Golden Bears picked up a pair of wins last week, taking down Augustana 80-56 on Thursday night, capping the week with a 81-60 win over Wayne State on Saturday. 

Avery Moeller recorded a career-high 17 points off the bench in the win Thursday night. Going 6-of-7 from the field  and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, with two rebounds and one assist. Lydia Haack led CSP in scoring with 23 points on 8-of-10 shooting, with three assists, one block and one steal. 

Ashley Schuelke matched Moeller's point total with 17 of her own, dishing out four assists and going 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. 

Augie opened up a 6-2 lead early in the first, before CSP took control, closing the first quarter with a 22-15 lead. The Golden Bears hit a 66.7 % clip in the opening period, leading by as many as 15, before the VIkings used a 13-0  run to narrow the gap as CSP lead 36-33 at the half. 

CSP returned to form in the third, putting up 27 points in the quarter to lead by 20 at the period's close. The Golden Bears led by as many as 26 in the fourth, with Concordia going on to win, 80-56. 

Three Golden Bears recorded 14 points in the win on Saturday night with Avery Moeller leading the charge. The sophomore went 7-of-12 from the field, with four rebounds, one assist and one steal. 

Lauren Wilson scored 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting with five boards and five assists. Emma Mommsen's 14 points came on 7-of-12 shooting, adding four rebounds with one assist and a steal. 

Lydia Haack dropped 13 points, turning in another efficient shooting performance, going 5-of-8 from the floor and 3-of-3 from beyond the arc. 

CSP held a one point lead at the end of the opening quarter, after shooting at a 50% clip in the period. The Golden Bears set the tone in the second, hitting at a 57.1% clip from three-point range to carry a 47-30 lead into the break. 

The Wildcats trimmed the CSP lead to nine early in the third, the Golden Bears responded by scoring 20 points in the period and shooting at a 46.6% clip. CSP added 14 points in the third to put the finishing touches on a 21 point win. 

Record Watch
Lydia Haack recorded 36 points over the weekend, bringing her CSP career point total to 960, 40 points shy of the 1,000 career point mark. Haack's 142 assists this season, bring her career assist total to 287, which places her 15th in program history. 

Lauren Wilson sits 55 points away from the 1,000 career point mark, the junior forward has put up 410 points this season. Leah Dengerud sits 57 points away from 1,ooo for her career, having scored 245 points this season. 

Golden Bears by the Numbers
The Golden Bears rank second in the NSIC and 17th in Division II in scoring offense this season, averaging 77.0 points per game. The CSP defense ranks sixth in the conference in scoring, allowing an average of 66.1 ppg. 

CSP is shooting at a 43.6% clip this season, which ranks eighth in the NSIC. The Golden Bears are limiting opponents to 38.3% shooting, which is the lowest opponent field goal percentage in the conference. 

Concordia lead the NSIC in combined team rebounds this season, averaging 39.7 rebounds per game. The Golden Bears rank ninth in combined opponent rebounds, allowing an average of 36.5 rpg. 

The CSP defense leads the NSIC and ranks 14th nationally in blocked shots, averaging 4.8 per game. Defensively the Golden Bears are third in the conference with 8.83 steals per game. 

CSP also ranks third in the NSIC and 14th nationally in assists at 17.0 per game, while leading the NSIC and ranking third nationally in assist/turnover ratio at 1.30. 

Lydia Haack leads the Golden Bears in scoring this season, averaging 18.3 points per game, good for fifth in the NSIC and 32nd in Division II. Lauren Wilson is second on the team, averaging 17.8 ppg, good for sixth in the conference and 42nd nationally. 

Leah Dengerud is averaging 10.7 ppg, Ashley Schuelke is averaging 8.6 ppg, Emma Mommsen is averaging 6.8 ppg and Avery Moeller is averaging 6.6 ppg off the bench. 

Lauren Wilson leads the team and ranks third in the NSIC in rebounding, averaging 8.6 rebounds per game. Lydia Haack is second on the team at 5.2 rpg, Emma Mommsen is averaging 5.2 as well, Leah Dengerud is averaging 4.6 rpg and Ashley Schuelke is averaging 3.2 rpg. 

Wilson is CSP's leading shooter, hitting at an even 50% (144-288) from the field this season, good for fifth in the NSIC. Haack is shooting 46.5% (147-316) which ranks 10th in the NSIC. 

Ashley Schuelke is shooting 42.2% (78-185), Leah Dengerud is shooting 40.3% (79-196) this season, Avery Moeller is shooting 40.3% (50-124) off the bench as well. 

Haack leads CSP in three-point shooting this season, hitting at a 42.9% (45-105) clip from beyond the arc. Avery Moeller boasts a 36.7% (33-90) three-point field goal percentage and Leah Dengerud is shooting 33.6% (41-122) from three-point range this season. 

On defense Lauren Wilson ranks third in the NSIC in blocked shots at 1.4 per game, Emma Mommsen ranks sixth in the conference at 1.0 blocks per game. Lydia Haack ranks sixth in the conference in steals per game at 2.1. 

Haack leads the NSIC and ranks fourth in Division II in assists, averaging 6.2 per game, while also leading the conference and ranking fourth nationally in assist/turnover ratio at 2.73. 

Series History: Sioux Falls 

Series Record: CSP 19, USF 9 
The Golden Bears and Cougars have played each other 28 times dating back to 2012, with CSP holding a 19-9 advantage in that span. 

Sioux Falls took the most recent matchup back in December at the Gangelhoff Center, snapping CSP's nine game win streak over the Cougars. 

Concordia held an eight point advantage at the end of the third quarter, but USF got hot in the fourth, tying the game at 63 with five minutes to play. Down by four with less than a minute to play, Leah Dengerud came up with a fastbreak steal and three-point bucket to make it a one-point game. 

Lauren Feddema tied the game at 77 with six seconds to play, a foul sent Sioux Falls to the line, after two made free throw attempts, the Golden Bears faced a two point deficit with 1.5 seconds to play. Lydia Haack got the inbound but couldn't get the three-point attempt to go as CSP fell by two points. 

Haack scored 27 points in the loss, while dishing out 11 assists to record her third double-double of the season. Leah Dengerud posted a season-high 19 points in the loss and Lauren Wilson posted 13 points and seven rebounds. 

About the Cougars
Sioux Falls has a 10-14 overall record and a 7-11 record in NSIC play. The Cougars currently sit in 10th place in the NSIC standings, in a three-way tie with Minot State and MSU Moorhead. 

The Cougars rank seventh in the NSIC in scoring offense, averaging 71.3 points per game this season. On defense the Cougars rank 13th in the conference in scoring defense, allowing an average of 72.0 ppg. 

USF is shooting at a 43.9% clip as a team this season, which ranks fourth in the NSIC. The Cougars rank fourth in the conference in opponent field goal percentage, limiting opponents to 40.6% from the field. 

On the glass, Sioux Falls is 10th in the NSIC in combined team rebounds, averaging 36.6 per game. Opponents are averaging 38.6 rebounds per game against Sioux Falls this season, placing them 14th in combined opponent rebounds.

Vaaler ranks fifth in the NSIC in three-point shooting, hitting at a 36.7% (58-158) from beyond the arc. Rose is shooting 36.5% (31-85) and Rease Murtaugh is shooting 34.3% (24-70) from beyond the arc. 

Series History: Southwest Minnesota State 

Series Record: CSP 46, SMSU 23
The Golden Bears and Mustangs are familiar foes, facing off on 69 previous occasions, with CSP winning 46 of those matchups dating back to 1975. Southwest took the first matchup between the two teams in December. 

The Mustangs eked out a 70-67 win at the Gangelhoff Center, CSP led by five at the end of the first quarter, but a 20-6 run helped SMSU lead by nine at the halftime break. 

Down by 10 in the third Lauren Wilson scored seven consecutive points to get CSP back within single digits. A Lydia Haack three ball gave the Golden Bears a lead for the first time since the second quarter. Two more lead changes ensued, with the Mustangs clinging to a three-point lead to win, 70-67. 

Lauren Wilson led the Golden Bears with 24 points on 9-of-18 shooting, adding two rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal. Lydia Haack scored 18 points in the loss, with five rebounds and five assists.

About the Mustangs
SMSU has a 13-10 overall record and 11-7 record in NSIC play. The Mustangs currently sit in sixth place in the NSIC standings, two games back of the Golden Bears and on a three game losing skid. 

The Mustangs boast the fourth best scoring offense in the NSIC, averaging 73.0 points per game. On defense SMSU ranks 10th in the conference in scoring, allowing an average of 70.7 ppg. 

As a team the Mustangs are shooting 44.7% from the field this season, good for second in the NSIC in team field goal percentage. Opponents are shooting at a 43.5% clip, placing them 13th in opponent field goal percentage. 

From beyond the arc the Mustangs are shooting 35.9%, good for second in the NSIC. 

On the glass, SMSU is ninth in the NSIC in combined team rebounds, averaging 37.0 rebounds per game. Opponents are averaging 32.3 rebounds per game, placing the Mustangs second in the NSIC in combined opponent rebounds.
