Golden Bears roll to six in a row with win over Beavers

CSP stayed hot with a 21 point win over Minot Friday night.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball (14-6, 10-5 NSIC) team improved its win streak to six games with a 75-54 win over Minot State (9-13, 6-9 NSIC) Friday night at the Gangelhoff Center.

The Golden Bears were led on the scoresheet by Lydia Haack who put together a 24 point night on 8-of-17 shooting and 3-of-6  from beyond the arc. The senior guard also recorded three rebounds, while dishing out six assists with one steal on defense.

It's the sixth time this season Haack has scored 20 or more points in a game with her last 20+ point game coming on Jan. 10 against Minnesota Crookston.

Leah Dengerud tallied 16 points for CSP, falling just shy of the double-double with nine rebounds on the night. Dengerud was a perfect 10-of-10 at the free throw line, while shooting 3-of-10 from the field.

Junior forward Lauren Wilson was strong on the glass all night, recording 12 rebounds and falling one bucket shy of the double-double with eight points, while providing five assists as well. Ashley Schuelke scored nine points in the win, going 4-of-9 from the field with three rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

Avery Moeller led the Golden Bears in bench scoring, with 10 points on 4-of-10 shooting.

Minot led for much of the opening quarter, grabbing a 7-2 lead in the opening minutes. From there CSP outscored Minot 13-7 to hold a 15-14 lead at the end of the opening quarter, taking a one point lead on a Lydia Haack layup in the closing seconds of the period.

Haack picked up right where she left off to start the second, drilling a three to open up a two point advantage. The Golden Bears controlled the quarter from there putting up 25 points in the period, with a 15-4 run putting CSP up by as many as 13 and carrying a 40-30 lead into the break.

The Beavers whittled the CSP lead down to eight early in the third, before the Golden Bears reasserted control with a 13-5 to close out the quarter up 13.

It was all CSP in the fourth as the Golden Bears led by as many as 25 after an Avery Moeller three ball with four minutes to play, going on to win, 75-54.

As a team the Golden Bears went 25-of-65 (38.5%) shooting on the night, while holding the Beavers to 19-0f-55 (34.5%) from the floor. CSP made the most of their free throw opportunities, going 20-of-24 (83.3%) at the charity stripe.

CSP won the battle inside with 40 points in the paint to Minot's 20, while scoring 16 points on second chance opportunities.

On the glass CSP held the advantage, outrebounding Minot 50-29, while forcing 20 Minot turnovers and turning them into 26 points.

The Golden Bears are back in action Saturday afternoon, as they take on UMary at the Gangelhoff Center. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
