Haack’s 28 points push Golden Bears past Marauders

CSP defense stifles UMary late to make it seven in a row.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Behind a 28 point night from senior guard Lydia Haack the Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team (15-6, 11-5 NSIC) took down the UMary Marauders (18-7, 11-5 NSIC) at the Gangelhoff Center Saturday afternoon, 83-69. The win improves the Golden Bears win streak to seven games, wrapping up North-South crossover play with a 7-1 record and moving into a tie for fourth place in the NSIC standings.

The Golden Bears were efficient all night long posting a 51.7% (30-58) shooting percentage as a team, while hitting at an 82.6% (19-23) clip from the charity stripe. The Concordia defense limited the Marauders to 39.7% (25-63) shooting and 28% (7-25) from beyond the arc.

For Haack it's the seventh time she has scored 20 or more points in a game this season, turning in her most efficient shooting performance to date, going 10-of-15 (66.7%) from the field. Haack dished out 10 assists as well to tally her fifth double-double of the season.

Lauren Wilson dropped 20 points in the win, marking the eighth time she's scored 20 or more in a game this season. Wilson was 6-of-15 shooting on the afternoon, with seven rebounds and two assists, while going 7-of-8 on free throw attempts.

Center Emma Mommsen recorded 12 points, while shooting an efficient 6-of-7 from the field with six boards. Ashley Schuelke posted eight points in the win, while being tasked with guarding the NSIC leader in points per game in Bergen Kinnebrew, limiting the guard to just 5-of-18 from the floor and 1-of-6 from beyond the arc. Schuelke dished out six assists and grabbed five rebounds, to go along with three steals.

Leah Dengerud tallied eight points as well on 3-of-5 shooting with five rebounds. Avery Moeller led CSP off the bench, dropping seven points with two rebounds.

The first half was closely contested with both teams shooting at a 47% clip from the field in the opening quarter. UMary led by as many as seven in the opening period, before CSP put together a quick 5-0 run to make it a two point game.

The Marauders led by as many as eight near the midway point of the second quarter, marking their largest lead of the night. CSP answered by hitting at a 56% clip from the floor tying things up at 40 with a Lydia Haack jumper in the paint, with UMary holding a 42-40 lead at the break.

It was a back-and-forth battle to open the third with CSP taking a lead for the first time since the opening quarter on a Emma Mommsen tip-in layup. A Leah Dengerud three ball later in the quarter put CSP up six, with the Marauders battling back to tie the game at 60 heading into the final quarter.

An 8-0 run to open the quarter set the tone for CSP, controlling play from there. The Golden Bears defense stifled the Marauders in the fourth, limiting them to just 23% shooting in the quarter. On offense CSP continued to click, outscoring UMary 23-9 in the quarter, to secure the 14 point win.

The Golden Bear defense suffocated the Marauders down the stretch, forcing 18 turnovers on the afternoon and turning them into 25 points. Concordia also won the battle inside with 48 points in the paint to Mary's 36.

The Golden Bears are back in action Thursday night, Feb. 5, when they take on Augustana at the Gangelhoff Center. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
