Mommsen, Bears cage Bulldogs in key road win

Mommsen secures double-double as CSP topples NSIC North leader

DULUTH, Minn. - For the second-straight night, Concordia-St. Paul (13-6, 9-5 NSIC) saw four starters score in double-figures while securing a 71-63 road win at Minnesota Duluth (14-4, 12-2 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon at Romano Gymnasium.

It was a big road win over a Bulldogs squad that entered having won 13 of its last 14 games, while Concordia secures its fifth-straight win and have now won eight of its last nine. CSP is now 26-27 all-time against UMD and 7-9 at Romano Gym. CSP has won four of the last five in the series against the Bulldogs including three in a row.

The Golden Bears wrap-up NSIC North-South crossover games next weekend at home, hosting Minot State (9-12, 6-8 NSIC) and UMary (17-6, 10-4 NSIC) to close out the month of January.

Four Golden Bear starters scored in double-figures for the second-straight night, but tonight Emma Mommsen joined the crew in a dominant post presence effort. She secured a double-double with 14 points, a career-high 15 rebounds and tied a career-high with three blocked shots. She had an efficient scoring night, too, putting up her 14 points on just eight shots, going 6-8 from the floor.

She was joined in double-figures by tonight's scoring leader Lauren Wilson with a 17-point effort including 7-10 at the foul line where CSP was 20-26 on the night compared to UMD's 11-11, a 9-point scoring advantage in an 8-point win.

Leah Dengerud had another 15-plus point game with 15 points, adding seven rebounds and a pair of three-pointers, and Lydia Haack had 14 points, five assists and four rebounds.

Lauren Feddema led the bench scorers with seven points, adding a pair of steals and rebounds along with a blocked shot.

Once again, Concordia's defensive effort was solid throughout, holding host UMD to 34.3 percent (24-70) shooting including 16.0 percent (4-25) from behind the arc. UMD didn't shoot higher than 37.5 percent in any quarter and Concordia had a standout third-quarter effort by holding UMD to 5-17 shooting, 0-6 three-point shooting and just 10 points.

CSP won the first three quarters and scored its most points in a quarter (24) in the fourth, holding off UMD despite the Bulldogs putting up 25 in the final frame.

Concordia also led nearly the entire night, holding a lead for 39:10 of a possible 40 minutes of play, while UMD had a lead for just 44 seconds in a game that featured just one tie and four lead changes - all in the final two minutes of the first quarter.

After UMD took a 15-14 lead late in the first quarter, CSP went on its first real run of the night, bursting for 7-straight points and a 21-15 lead early in the second quarter as three different Bears scored during the run: a Dengerud three-pointer, a Feddema layup just before the quarter break, and a Mommsen layup to start the second quarter. The Golden Bears led the rest of the night.

Concordia led by as many as 15 points in the fourth quarter, using a 12-4 stretch of play from the 8-minute mark until Wilson converted a three-point play for a 61-46 lead with 2:55 to play, turning a 7-point lead with eight minutes to go into a 15-point lead with under three minutes left.

The Bulldogs chipped away at the lead, getting it to a 6-point margin with 40 seconds (64-58), a 5-point margin with 30 seconds (66-61) but Concordia was 6-8 at the foul line in the final minute to keep the lead safe and secure the win.

Like CSP, UMD also had four starters in double-figures led by Myra Moorjani's 13 points and seven assists, but CSP made things difficult for UMD's leading scorer on the night on 3-11 shooting and 0-5 three-point shooting.
