Beavers spoil Golden Bears perfect start

CSP will look to bounce back on Sunday facing the Marauders

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia-St. Paul women's soccer team (5-1, 2-1 NSIC) dropped their first contest of the season to the Beavers of Minot State (1-4-1, 1-1-1) 1-0 on a warm fall Friday night at Sea Foam Stadium.

In a physical first half, the Golden Bears out shot the Beavers 10-3 but were unable to capitalize on a scoring opportunity.

After starting the game with six straight shots, a CSP miscue in the 28th-minute let Minot get on the board early. Reigning NSIC Freshman of the Year Anna Miotto scored the eventual game-winner on an assist by Elsa Duquesne.

The Golden Bears and Beavers went back and forth exchanging fouls late in the first half to send the game to halftime.

In the second half, the Navy and Gold were hungry to find the net, once again out shooting Minot 9-4 and holding a 2-0 corner kick advantage.

Concordia fought for every chance to set themselves up but a stellar Beaver defense would have none of the CSP fight.

With one minute remaining, the fate of the Golden Bears rested on a corner kick that landed straight in front of the goal but was kicked clear out of the scoring area by a Minot defender to hand CSP their first loss of the season.

Concordia held the final shot advantage 19-7, marking their highest shot total of the season. The Navy and Gold also held a 4-2 corner kick advantage and forced the Minot defense to make seven saves.

Junior Sydney Potter got her fifth start of the season in the net where she recorded one save to bring her season total to 10.

Jada Cannady and Lexi Pettit each led the team with four shots with one coming on goal.

Brooke Nelson and Clare Snapko each played a 90-minute outing on the pitch to lead the CSP defense.

The Golden Bears will look to bounce-back on Sunday, where they will host the Marauders of UMary at Sea Foam Stadium. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.
