Golden Bears fall to Wildcats in regular-season finale

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse team (9-7, 5-3 GLIAC) fell 8-7 to the Wildcats of Northern Michigan in their regular-season finale at the Superior Dome on Saturday afternoon. 

Six players found the net in the loss including Sara Kaiser with a pair of goals to mark her sixth multi-goal game of the season and an assist to record three points. 

It was a close game through the entirety, with each team tallying 22 ground balls and both teams scoring on their man-up opportunities. 

The Wildcats got on the board first just three minutes into the game to take the early 1-0 lead. Just one minute later Kaiser would score her first goal of the day to quickly even the score. 

The GLIAC leader in goals Josie Lakosky scored four minutes later to end the first quarter 2-1 in favor of the Wildcats.

Sydney Smith came out to even the score in the second quarter, scoring her 17th goal of the season on a man-up opportunity. 

Another man-up opportunity, this time for Northern Michigan gave them back the lead to which Kaysawn Carlson would have none of and would quickly respond. 

With just one second remaining in the first half, Shelby Hansen scored a free-position goal to send the Golden Bears into halftime with their first lead of the day. 

Morgan Haapala started the second half with a bang, scoring just under a minute into play to give Concordia their largest lead of the day 5-3. 

Back-to-back goals from NMU would even the score once more and end the third quarter. 

Lakowsky scored a pair of goals to start the fourth quarter and give the Wildcats the edge up 7-5 with 11 minutes left. 

Anna Fisher broke into the Lakowsky run to score her team-leading 46th goal of the year and keep the Golden Bears in the game. Just 30 seconds later, Kaiser scored her second goal of the day to tie the game and show that the Navy and Gold were not going down without a fight with an assist by Jenna Hamann

With seven minutes left on the clock, the Wildcats would score the eventual game-winner to which CSP would fire off one final shot with 20 seconds remaining that would be saved and give NMU the 8-7 victory. 

Katie Colleran got her 11th start of the season in the net where she made nine saves to bring her season total to 93. 

Natalie Brownfield led the defense forcing three caused turnovers and collecting three ground balls. 

Susie Monson added seven draw controls, two ground balls and three caused turnovers to help lead the Golden Bears. 

Both teams saw an even matchup with the Wildcats holding the shot-advantage 23-19 while making 15 on goal and Golden Bears holding the 13-5 draw control advantage. 

The Golden Bears will look to the postseason where they have clinched the No. 2 seed in the GLIAC Conference Tournament. They will head to Allendale, Mich. where Grand Valley State will serve as the host. The Navy and Gold will face Northern Michigan in the semi-finals with a trip to their first ever title game on the line.
