Golden Bears come up empty in Mankato

#4 Minnesota State hands Concordia-St. Paul a midweek sweep

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul (17-25, 13-19 NSIC) dropped a road doubleheader today, falling 10-0 and 6-0 at #4 Minnesota State (37-4, 29-3 NSIC) at Bowyer Field.

Concordia will look to rebound with a five-game homestand starting with a three-game series this weekend at Barnes Field against Bemidji State (5-32, 4-26 NSIC) with a noon doubleheader on Saturday followed by Sunday's noon 9-inning game for senior day.

Kal Brohmer went 2-5 with a double while drawing his 101st career walk to tie Jon Stockton's CSP career record (2008-11) and Trett Joles also had a 2-hit day, going 2-6 in the doubleheader.

GAME 1: MSU 10, CSP 0
A crooked second inning haunted the Golden Bears, despite starting pitcher Fritz Meyer locating his pitches and keeping the high-powered Maverick lineup off-balance in the early innings.

Meyer struck out a pair in the first inning, working around a one-out single and two-out walk and in the second inning, he was headed towards hanging another zero on MSU before a couple of bad bounces went the Mavericks way. After retiring the first batter and a pair of soft singles, Meyer induced a comebacker for the second out. But MSU leadoff hitter Matt Fleischhacker was jammed on a 1-2 pitch, fighting it off just over the mound and in between the shortstop and second baseman for an infield RBI single. A walk and an HBP loaded the bases, with Meyer forcing a soft pop-up to Maverick cleanup hitter Louis Magers. The soft fly ball by Magers was just over the left side of the infield and in front of the hard-charging CSP left fielder, with Tomas Lee and Will Husemann colliding and the ball coming loose for a bases-clearing unlucky double.

The Mavericks picked up another two runs with two outs in the third for a 7-0 lead, ending Meyer's day. Meyer would take the loss despite pitching effectively.

The Golden Bears looked to rally in the fourth inning when Kal Brohmer led off with a double deep to the left center gap, but he'd be stranded in scoring position in CSP's first threat of the day.

Although the Mavericks put up two more runs on reliever Christian Lindow in the fourth inning, he would retire the side in order in his second inning of work in the fifth. Andrew Boeser finished the game on the mound for Concordia, giving up a leadoff infield single before retiring the next two Mavericks. He then allowed a pair of two-out singles for MSU to pick up their final run.

In the Concordia seventh, CSP's reserves had a chance to make an impact with Cooper Borchardt picking up his first base hit of the season to up his average to .333. An error put two runners aboard, but CSP would leave runners on the corners to end the game.

GAME 2: MSU 6, CSP 0
Kal Brohmer led off game two with his 101st career walk to tie Jon Stockton's career record, winning a nine-pitch at bat that included four foul balls (three with two strikes).

But it was the Mavericks who struck first with a leadoff single through the left side of the infield and a one-out walk. After Reece Piontek struck out MSU cleanup hitter Louis Magers for the second out, he gave up a home run on the next pitch as MSU took a 3-0 lead.

Piontek then settled into a groove, retiring the next five Mavericks in a stretch where he rolled up outs on 14 of 16 batters to put him into the sixth inning. He worked around a pair of one-out singles in the third inning but getting a strikeout and a lineout.

The Golden Bears threatened in the third inning as Koby McBroome and Kal Brohmer strung together back-to-back one-out singles with Bennett McCollow following with a walk to load the bases, but CSP wasn't able to push a run across.

CSP threatened again in the sixth against MSU's bullpen as Charlie Harms and Trett Joles had back-to-back two-out singles, but again left two on base.

Piontek started the sixth inning with a strikeout before a one-out double ended his outing. He allowed just five hits and a walk in his 5.1 innings, putting up a 9-1 strikeout-walk ratio while striking out 41 percent of the 22 Mavericks he faced, using just 89 pitches while working his way well into the third time through MSU's lineup.

He was relieved by Jack Greenlun, who worked 2.0 strong innings of relief, striking out three while issuing one walk and allowing two unearned runs on two hits. Cooper Mollet relieved Greenlun in the ninth, getting the final two outs including a strikeout, allowing no runs or hits.

But after the sixth inning, Concordia would only manage one more hit in the late innings, a one-out single up by the middle by Joles in the ninth. Joles went 2-4 in the second game while McBroome (1-2, BB) and Brohmer (1-3, BB) each reached base twice as well.
