Seniors provide strong starts in Saturday sweep

Dahlberg and Rusch open the weekend with solid outings while offense erupts in game two

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Senior starting pitchers Korey Dahlberg and Gavin Rusch provided quality and length in helping Concordia-St. Paul (19-25, 15-19 NSIC) to 3-1 and 13-3 victories over Bemidji State (5-36, 4-30 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon at Barnes Field.

Dahlberg and Rusch will be honored with 11 of their teammates on senior day with the series finale tomorrow at noon, and they set the tone for their teammates in Saturday's doubleheader. Dahlberg held the Beavers hitless the first time through the order as CSP's pitching staff allowed two singles in the game one win. Rusch kept the momentum going in game two, working six strong innings for the win as CSP out-hit BSU 23-8 in the doubleheader.

Among the hits, Concordia powered up with four home runs in the second game and nine extra-base hits in the doubleheader. Senior Bennett McCollow had two-run home runs in back-to-back innings in game two to give him eight on the year, while Trett Joles had a double (6) in the first game and his fifth home run in game two, and was joined by Kaden Johnson for his fifth homer in game two, as well. Will Husemann hit three doubles on the day, two in game one and another in game two (6) while senior Noah Juliar added his team-leading 13th double of the year in the second game.

Senior Kal Brohmer had a pair of walks on the day, one in each game, pushing him into sole possession of the program's career walks record with 103.

The sweep puts Concordia (15-19) two games out of a four-team tie for seventh in the NSIC standings between Winona State, UMary, Minnesota Duluth and Minnesota Crookston, all at 17-17.

GAME 1: CSP 3, BSU 1
Korey Dahlberg set the Beavers down in order in the first inning, the first two via strikeout, to start the doubleheader.

The offense took notes, as Noah Juliar drilled a single down the third base line and was followed by Charlie Harms pulling a single down the right field line for a two-out rally. Trett Joles provided the production with a two-run double to the right center gap, which provided enough support for Dahlberg on the day.

While Dahlberg would carry a no-hitter into the fourth, the Beavers would put runners on base against him in each of the second, third, fourth and fifth innings. But Dahlberg was able to maneuver out of each situation, inducing three groundouts in the second, Joles fielding a pair of bunts in the third including one for the third out, and ended a two-on threat in the fourth with a strikeout.

His day came to an end in the fifth inning following a one-out RBI single to cut the lead in half, but relief pitcher Cooper Mollet made quick work of BSU, inducing a first-pitch double play as BSU left the tying run in scoring position.

In the bottom of the fifth, Joles led off with a walk with pinch hitter Jack Setterlund sacrificing him to second with Will Husemann driving him in with a double down the right field line and a 3-1 lead.

The bullpen did the rest, as Mollet went 1.2 innings of relief without allowing a hit with one strikeout, turning it over to senior Jack Greenlun for a 1-2-3 seventh inning and his fifth save, striking out his last batter.

Dahlberg improved to 2-5 with the win, allowing a run on two singles and two walks with three strikeouts in 4.1 innings.

Joles went 2-2 with a run, two RBIs and a walk in the first game and Husemann was 2-2 with a pair of doubles, an RBI and a walk.

While Concordia won the contest 3-1, the Golden Bears left nine runners on base with seven hits, four walks, reaching on error once.

GAME 2: CSP 13, BSU 3 (7 innings)
In game two, Bemidji State struck first with a pair of unearned runs in the first inning after the first three batters of the day reached on error against Gavin Rusch. He retired the next two batters, but the Beavers produced a two-out bases loaded single to score the game's first two runs.

BSU added another run in the second inning with back-to-back one-out hits followed by an RBI groundout.

In the third, Concordia pounced. Bennett McCollow hit a two-run home run with one out to start the scoring, and after a single by Noah Juliar and walk to Charlie Harms, Trett Joles followed with a three-run blast to give Concordia the lead back.

It was a lead CSP wouldn't relinquish and the five run third inning would be enough, but the Golden Bears came back for more in the fourth.

After sending up all nine to the plate in the third inning, Concordia sent 13 to the plate in the fourth inning against three BSU pitchers.

It was the second time on the day that BSU would have a different pitcher record each out in the inning, with three getting an out apiece in the fifth inning of game one, before repeating the feat in the fourth inning of game two.

And for the second-straight inning,a  two-run homer by McCollow started the scoring surge with one out. Once again, Juliar and Harms followed with a hit and a walk, and after the pitching change, this time Joles would finally be retired on a high pop out to right.

Will Husemann was hit by pitch to load the bases with two outs, with Tomas Lee hitting a sharp two-run single through the right side. Kaden Johnson made it two-straight innings with two home runs for the home team, hitting his fifth of the year to score three runs for a 12-3 lead and a seven-run inning.

After the first two innings, Rusch settled into a groove, with three-up, three-down third and fifth innings and a pair of strikeouts in the sixth, including his last batter of the game.

Rusch went 6.0 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk with five strikeouts, picking up the win to improve to 3-4.

Concordia added a run for the 10-run lead in the bottom of the inning on Juliar's double down the left field line, scoring senior Koby McBroome.

In the seventh, Caden Carsen was called in to finish the contest, retiring all three Beavers he faced including a strikeout for the run-rule victory.

McCollow had a big game, going 3-4 with two home runs and four RBIs, while Juliar followed him in the lineup with a 3-5 performance, scoring twice and driving in one on his 13th double. Joles had a pair of two-hit games on the day, going 2-4 in game two with his fifth homer and three RBIs. Lee went 2-4 with two RBIs and McBroome was 2-3 with a walk and two runs batting in the ninth spot, turning the lineup over to Kal Brohmer who was 2-4 with a walk and a run.

The Golden Bears extend their winning streak over Bemidji State to 15 games heading into the series finale on Sunday at noon, with senior day following the game to honor CSP's 13 player senior & graduating class.
