ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul (17-23, 13-17 NSIC) secured a big win on Saturday, topping Augustana (28-12, 22-8 NSIC) 6-4 at Barnes Field to snap Augustana's nine-game winning streak.
The win also snaps Augie's 16-game winning streak against the Golden Bears and is Concordia's first win at Barnes Field against the Vikings since 2017.
With a 2-3 record against a challenging five-game homestand in the books, Concordia will travel to #6 Minnesota State (35-4, 27-3 NSIC) for a Wednesday doubleheader against the NSIC leaders looking to snap MSU's five-game winning streak with MSU having won nine of its last 10 and 18 of its last 20 games.
Freshman
Eric Berg went 3-4 with a double and scored a pair of runs and
Koby McBroome went 1-3 with a pair of RBIs as the lower half of CSP's lineup came up big. McBroome's sacrifice fly scored Berg for the tying run in the bottom of the sixth inning after Berg led off with a double, and McBroome's RBI single in the eighth inning scored Berg again, as Berg led off the eighth with a single.
Sophomore right handed pitcher
Ian Segna worked six strong innings to pickup the win, improving to 5-2 on the season. He allowed two earned runs on seven hits (five singles and two doubles) and two walks with three strikeouts. He came up big early in the game, getting 10-straight outs to carry the Golden Bears from the second to fifth innings having allowed just one run against Augustana.
Segna settling in after the first inning Augie run allowed the Golden Bears to take the lead for him in the middle innings. In the fourth inning, CSP capitalized on two Augustana errors to score a pair of runs to take the 2-1 lead, and extended it to a 3-1 margin with a run in the fifth on
Trett Joles' two-out RBI single to second, scoring
Kal Brohmer.
Augustana was able to get to Segna in the sixth, facing him for the third time, picking up three runs to reclaim a 4-3 lead, but two of the three runs in the inning were unearned.
Concordia went back on top for Segna in the bottom of the inning with Berg's leadoff double giving the club momentum. A walk to
Will Husemann put the go-ahead runner on base, and
Kaden Johnson sacrificed the tying run to third and go-ahead run to second. McBroome followed with a sacrifice fly and Brohmer singled through the right side to score Husemann for the 5-4 lead.
The Golden Bears turned to
Jack Greenlun to preserve the lead in the seventh inning and promptly retired the first five batters he faced and worked around a two-out walk in the eighth by inducing a ground out.
Concordia gave him a cushion with another run in the eighth with McBroome's two-out single down the third base line scoring Berg.
In the ninth, Augustana's ninth batter reached on an error to start the inning, turning the lineup over to the top, but Greenlun forced a pop out to short before a game-ending double play to
Bennett McCollow, who went to McBroome for the out at second and
Charlie Harms to end the game at first on the 4-6-3.
Greenlun earned his fourth save of the year, working three no-hit innings, striking out two with just one walk among the 10 Vikings he faced on 30 pitches.
Joining Berg with multi-hit games for Concordia's lineup were Brohmer (2-4) and Joles (2-4) who each scored once and had an RBI. Harms added a double and one of three sacrifice bunts for the Golden Bears, who also produced a sacrifice fly on a day when executing led to a 2-run win.
