ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul baseball (16-23, 12-17 NSIC) dropped a doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Barnes Field to Augustana (28-11, 22-7 NSIC), losing the first game 8-1 before falling 12-6 in game two.
The two teams complete the three-game series on Saturday with a noon first pitch at Barnes Field.
Noah Juliar went 4-8 in the doubleheader with a game one double, game two homer and two RBIs.
Koby McBroome went 3-6 with two walks, a double in each game and a stolen base in game two.
Charlie Harms added a game two home run.
GAME 1: AUGIE 8, CSP 1
Senior
Korey Dahlberg started strong, getting strikeouts to the first two Vikings he faced before Augustana came up with a pivotal two-out rally in the first inning including a grand slam to take a decisive 5-0 lead.
Dahlberg settled in after that, working his way through 4.0 innings and allowing just two more runs the rest of the way.
Concordia had plenty of chances to come back, too, putting together five hits including two doubles, while drawing nine walks. But CSP left 12 runners on base in the 7-inning affair. CSP left runners on first and second with one out in the second and third, loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth, left runners on first and third with two outs in the fifth and stranded a two-out double in the sixth.
Trailing 8-0 and down to their final three outs in the seventh, Concordia turned to the bench for a rally as pinch hitters
Jack Setterlund and
Jeremy McGuigan drew walks to start the inning, and
Tomas Lee added a one-out pinch-hit walk to load the bases as Setterlund scored on a wild pitch with two outs to break up the Augustana shutout bid.
Dahlberg and reliever
Caden Carsen combined to allow just three Augustana runs after the first inning, with Carsen working 3.0 innings of relief allow just an unearned run. Carsen allowed two hits and a walk with a pair of strikeouts in a strong performance against one of the league's top lineups.
Noah Juliar went 1-3 with his 12th double and
Koby McBroome went 1-1 with a double and two walks.
Kal Brohmer (1-4),
Trett Joles (1-3) and
Kaden Johnson (1-3) each had a hit, as well.
GAME 2: AUGIE 12, CSP 6
In game two, it was Concordia who struck first in the opening inning following a 1-2-3 first inning on the mound from senior starter
Gavin Rusch.
The Golden Bears gave him support early with three-straight ground ball singles from
Kal Brohmer,
Bennett McCollow and
Noah Juliar.
Charlie Harms and
Trett Joles each produced sacrifice flies for a 2-0 first-inning lead.
While the Vikings got a run back on Rusch in the second, CSP matched the Vikings with a run in the third as the teams traded solo home runs, with Concordia's struck off the bat of Harms, giving him two RBIs in the first three innings, extending his strong string of run production with 16 RBIs over the last eight games including six multi-RBI contests in that stretch.
Rusch was solid the first two times through Augustana's lineup, putting up three zeroes in the first, third and fourth innings.
He ran into trouble the third time through the order, however, as five of six Vikings were able to register hits in their third time facing him. He was lifted with two outs in the fifth in an inning that Augustana would claim its first lead of the day, putting up six runs in the frame for a 7-3 lead.
Concordia continued the long inning in the bottom half, with McCollow leading off with a walk and scoring on a 2-run shot to the opposite field in right by Juliar, his second home run of the year. Harms followed with a walk and was moved up to second on a ground out and third on a passed ball, scoring on
Tomas Lee's RBI single as the Golden Bears were able to get to the Viking bullpen in the fifth inning, trailing 7-6.
Concordia had a chance to do more damage in the sixth on back-to-back one-out singles from McCollow and Juliar, but came up empty.
Augustana capitalized, scoring three in the seventh and two in the eighth to pull away for reliever Harry Blum, who pitched 4.2 shutout innings in relief to earn the win for Augustana.
Concordia put up five hits against Blum, but couldn't put a runner in scoring position in the final three innings against him, as he had solid control with six strikeouts and no walks.
Juliar went 3-5 with his second homer and two RBIs and Harms was 1-3 with a walk, his third homer and two RBIs. McCollow was 3-4 with a walk and two runs, Lee went 2-4 with an RBI in his fifth start of the year and McBroome was 2-4 with his seventh double.
