ST. PAUL, Minn. - Senior Sydney Pelzer and junior Riley Rosenthal smacked walk-off home runs to help the Golden Bears (21-24, 13-7 NSIC) sweep Minot State (N.D.) (25-18, 14-7 NSIC). Pelzer's came in a 5-3 game one win and Rosenthal's was in a 6-5 game two victory. The senior shortstop smacked a home run in each game and led the Golden Bears with five RBIs.
Pelzer's two-run, walk-off homer came with two outs in the ninth inning. Her second home run also knocked in two runs in the first inning of the second game. She totaled four hits, adding a double and two walks vs. the Beavers. Pelzer finished the weekend with a home run in each of the four games.
Her five RBIs brought her season total up to 53 this season, tying Bekah Roth in 2014 for the most in program history. Pelzer broke the career RBIs record earlier this season and now has 17 more than second place. Her 12 home runs tie Clara Heislen for the third-most in a single season.
Alexis Monty smacked two home runs and two doubles to tally four hits. Both of her home runs were solo shots in game two. She scored a team-high four runs on the day.
Rosenthal finished with four hits including a double and a home run. Her walk-off home run in game two marked her only RBI of the day. She added a stolen base and tallied seven putouts defensively with three assists.
On the mound, Erica McCullough threw a season-high nine strikeouts and pitched all nine innings in game one. This marked her second complete game of the season, her most innings pitched in a game and her pitches thrown with 147. She allowed three earned runs and two walks.
Tatum Dunlavy picked up the win in game two recording the final two outs with a strikeout. Emmy Bowne pitched 6.1 innings before leaving in a tie game. She allowed four earned runs with three strikeouts and a walk.
Ava Blake added two hits and reached twice after being hit-by-pitch. Katie Klotz recorded two doubles in game one with an RBI. Ella Arendt, Bryleigh Dana and Rachel Novak each tallied a hit.
With the win, the Golden Bears are tied for fifth place with Minot State in the NSIC standings. These mark the only conference wins for CSP this season against a team currently tied or ahead of them in the standings. Concordia split with Minnesota Duluth (31-15, 11-7 NSIC) who is two wins behind.
Concordia-St. Paul remains unbeaten at Carlander Field this season with an 8-0 record. With the sweep, the Golden Bears snap a three-game losing streak to Minot State. This marks the sixth NSIC sweep for CSP this season.
The Golden Bears are back in action next weekend to face No. 14 Augustana (S.D.) (37-9, 19-3 NSIC) on Friday, April 18, and Southwest Minnesota State (28-20, 10-12 NSIC) on Saturday, April 19. The Vikings are the top team in the conference. The Golden Bears have the opportunity to clinch an NSIC Tournament berth next weekend.
Game One
With the game tied 3-3 in extra innings, Pelzer finally ended the game in the ninth. After a Monty double to deep center field, the senior shortstop smacked the ball to right center that never had a doubt of being over the fence for the walk-off win.
The game was back-and-forth throughout, starting early on with Minot State scoring via Sara Van Wickler and Paige Kellogg's back-to-back doubles. The Beavers loaded the bases with two outs, but were unable to get any more runs after a flyout to end the inning.
In the second inning, Novak reached via a fielding error and then stole second. Klotz made the most of this opportunity with an RBI double to tie the game at 1-1. Minot State reclaimed the lead in the fourth inning via a single, double and sacrifice fly.
The Golden Bears answered in the bottom of the inning led off by another Klotz double. Arendt and Lily Burke each flew out to bring pinch runner Haley Knoblauch home. Burke earned the sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2.
Rosenthal doubled and Pelzer hit an RBI single in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead, CSP's first of the game. McCullough struck out two batters in the sixth inning. Van Wickler led off the seventh inning with a solo homer, tying the game 3-3.
McCullough struck out the final batter in the seventh to send the game into extra play. Minot State did not reach in extra innings. The senior pitcher finished the game with a season-high nine strikeouts and allowed three earned runs while picking up her third win of the season.
Pelzer led the team with three hits and three RBIs including a home run and a double. Rosenthal added three hits including a double and scored a run. Monty and Klotz each smacked two doubles.
Van Wickler and Anna LaCount each tallied three hits. Van Wickler scored twice. Reegan Floyd picked up the loss on the mound to fall to 13-6. She pitched 8.2 innings allowing four earned runs and throwing six strikeouts.
Both teams finished with 12 hits, an error and left eight runners on base. The Beavers left the bases loaded twice. CSP hit seven doubles compared to only three for Minot State.
Game Two
With two runners on base for the Beavers in a tie game in the seventh inning, Dunlavy entered the game. She was able to get the last two outs via a strikeout and a groundout. Rosenthal led off the bottom of the inning with a walk-off solo homer to left-center field for the win.
This marked the junior's third home run of the season after she hit two in one game against Bemidji State on March 21. This is the most home runs she's hit in a season in her career.
Monty walked to start the game and Pelzer hit a home run to give the Golden Bears an early 2-0 advantage. After her walk-off in game one, this marked back-to-back at-bats with home runs for Pelzer.
Minot State's Sarah Misner hit a solo homer to cut the lead down to one. Monty answered with a solo home run of her own to lead off the third inning. The Golden Bears then took a 4-1 lead in the fourth after singles by Blake and Arendt.
The Beavers found offense in the fifth inning, reaching on two singles and a fielder's choice error to load the bases. Kellogg then smacked a grand slam to take a 5-4 lead.
The Minot State lead didn't last long as Monty tied the game with another leadoff solo homer in the bottom of the fifth inning. That was the last hit for the Golden Bears until Rosenthal's walk-off homer in the seventh.
Bowne pitched 6.1 innings allowing four earned runs on 10 hits. She walked one batter and threw three strikeouts. Dunlavy improved her record to 10-7 recording the final two outs with one strikeout.
Monty led the Golden Bears batting 2-3 with the home runs. Pelzer reached in all three of her plate appearances with the two-run homer and two walks. Rosenthal and Arendt each had a hit and an RBI.
Misner finished with three hits for the Beaves and Kellogg had two hits with four RBIs. Jasmine Blizzard pitched five innings allowing five earned runs and three walks. She threw two strikeouts. Calley Olson took the loss after pitching one inning allowing the game-winning home run and one walk.
Minot State outhit Concordia 10-7 and each team committed one error. The Beavers left seven runners on base while the Golden Bears left five. CSP walked four times while Minot State walked once.
