SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Concordia-St. Paul softball team (21-26, 13-9 NSIC) fell to No. 12 Augustana (S.D.) (39-9, 21-3 NSIC) on Friday afternoon, 6-2 and 8-0. Freshman Ella Arendt highlighted CSP's day with a solo home run in game one.
Arendt finished the day with a team-high two hits, adding a single in game two. The home run marked her third of the season. Riley Rosenthal added an RBI on a sacrifice fly a few plays after Arendt's home run. Rosenthal also had a single in game two for her lone hit of the day.
Sydney Pelzer, Haley Knoblauch and Lily Burke each added a hit for the Golden Bears. Burke scored the run on Rosenthal's sacrifice fly.
Emmy Bowne led CSP on the mound with a 2.80 ERA. She entered in relief in both contests. She pitched five innings while allowing six hits and two earned runs. The sophomore did not walk a batter and had two strikeouts.
The Golden Bears are back in action on Saturday against Southwest Minnesota State (28-22, 10-14 NSIC). The Mustangs were swept by Winona State (36-11, 17-5 NSIC) on Friday. The doubleheader begins at noon at Mustang Field in Marshall, Minn.
Game One
The Vikings started the scoring with a two-run homer in the bottom of the second by Stella Harber. This gave Augustana an early 2-0 lead.
Arendt responded with a one-out solo homer in the top of the third inning. Burke singled in the next at-bat. After Alexis Monty walked, both she and Burke stole second. Rosenthal almost knocked it out of the park in left field for the sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2.
Augustana didn't let the game stay tied as Lexi Lander hit a three-run homer to right-center in the bottom frame of the third. The Golden Bears only reached once the rest of the game via a Burke walk. The Vikings added a run on an RBI single in the sixth to win, 6-2.
Arendt and Burke had CSP's lone hits of the game. The Vikings outhit the Golden Bears 11-2. Neither team had an error.
Erica McCullough picked up the loss after starting the game. She pitched three innings allowing six hits and five earned runs. She threw two strikeouts with a walk. Bowne entered in relief, pitching three innings allowing five hits and one earned run while tallying a strikeout.
Augustana's Grace Glanzer improved her record to 19-6, pitching all seven innings. She allowed two hits, two walks and two earned runs. She tallied 11 strikeouts.
Game Two
The Vikings scored two runs in the first innings, five runs in the third inning and Sidney Smart hit a walk-off solo home run in the sixth inning for the 8-0 win.
Concordia's first hit came in the fourth inning when Knoblauch entered in the fourth inning. She hit a two-out single to break the no-hitter. Arendt added CSP's second hit with a two-out single in the fifth.
The Golden Bears' best opportunity came in the sixth inning. Rosenthal and Pelzer hit back-to-back singles and Knoblauch walked to load the bases with one out. Lander then struck out back-to-back Golden Bear batters to leave the runners stranded.
Lander picked up the win allowing four hits and two walks. She tallied six strikeouts and improved her record to 17-3. Smart led the Vikings offensively with two hits and three RBIs.
Dunlavy took the loss starting the game pitching three innings. She allowed eight hits, two walks and seven earned runs. Bowne entered in the fourth inning, pitching two innings. She allowed one hit and one earned run while adding a strikeout.
