ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia-St. Paul softball team (19-24, 11-7 NSIC) swept UMary (N.D.) (9-34, 2-16 NSIC) on Saturday to pick up its 15th straight win over the Marauders. Senior Sydney Pelzer hit a home run in each game to bring her total up to 10 this season.Â
The Golden Bears defeated UMary 4-0 in game one and 7-3 in game two. Concordia had 17 different players compete on the day. CSP used stout defense to hold UMary scoreless in 13 of 14 innings and was the team's first NSIC doubleheader without an error.Â
Pelzer is now tied for 10th in program history in home runs in a season and sixth in career home runs with 21. She knocked in three RBIs totaling 48 this season. That ties her total in 2022 for third in program history in RBIs in a season and is five away from tying for the most.Â
Emmy Bowne had an impressive outing in game one pitching a complete game while only allowing one hit. She did not throw a strikeout or walk any batters while only throwing 65 pitches in the contest.
Rachel Novak led CSP on the day in total hits batting 3-4 with three singles. She was also 3-3 on stolen base attempts. Lily Burke smacked the first home run of her career in game one and Ella Arendt smacked her second home run in game two.Â
Alexis Monty added two hits singling twice. Katie Klotz tallied two RBIs and had a hit. Ava Blake added an RBI single in game one. Riley Rosenthal, Emily Knoblauch, Haley Knoblauch and Bryleigh Dana each had a hit.Â
Tatum Dunlavy picked up the win on the mound in game two throwing six strikeouts and only walking one batter. She pitched a complete game and tied her career high in strikeouts. Dunlavy also scored two runs baserunning for the Golden Bears.Â
Concordia-St. Paul is back in action on Sunday against Minot State (N.D.) (24-16, 12-5 NSIC). First pitch for the doubleheader is scheduled for noon at Carlander Field.Â
Game One
After two outs in the bottom of the first inning, Pelzer drilled a solo homer in left field for the first run of the game. Bowne did not allow a hit until the fourth inning. Monty also recorded three straight outs for CSP in the fourth frame via a groundout, lineout and popout.Â
Dana doubled and Novak singled to start the fourth inning, putting runners on first and third. Klotz hit a sacrifice fly to bring in the second run of the game. After Novak stole second, Blake singled up the middle for the third run of the game.Â
Burke homered in the opening at-bat of the fifth inning, marking the first of her young career. The Golden Bears got nine straight batters out from the fifth to the seventh inning to win, 4-0.Â
This marked the second time Bowne has only allowed one hit in a game this season as she did it against Ohio Dominican on March 7. She totaled 65 pitches with 16 flyouts and five groundouts. Bowne improved her record to 8-9 this season.Â
The Golden Bears outhit the Marauders 7-1. UMary's Jayleen Rojas picked up the loss allowing all four runs on six hits. Rojas allowed one walk, the only one of the game. Neither team committed an error.Â
Game Two
Dana and Novak walked in the second inning, setting up Arendt for the three-run homer to give CSP an early advantage. Pelzer added two more runs in the third inning with a home run after a Rosenthal single.Â
Dunlavy walked and Novak singled in the next two at-bats. A Marauder error allowed Dunlavy to score on the single and Novak to advance to third. Klotz hit an RBI single on the next pitch, giving the Golden Bears a 7-0 advantage.Â
After that, CSP brought in six different pinch hitters throughout the rest of the game. UMary finally got on the board in the sixth inning scoring three runs on five hits. Dunlavy also threw two strikeouts in the sixth, one of which ended the inning with two on base.Â
The freshman pitcher allowed nine hits and three earned runs. She tied her season high with six strikeouts pitching a complete game. She improved her record to 9-7 on the season and only allowed one walk.Â
Arendt led CSP with the home run and three RBIs. She also walked once. Pelzer went 1-2 with the home run and two RBIs. Klotz tallied a hit and an RBI. Dunlavy scored twice after taking Dana's spot in the batting order following her double.Â
UMary outhit Concordia 9-8 while committing the only error of the game. Ariana Retuta led the Marauders with two hits and scored a run. UMary left five runners on base while CSP left four.
