CLERMONT, Fla. - The Concordia-St. Paul softball team (6-12) split on Thursday's doubleheader against Ohio competition. The Golden Bears lost to Ashland (8-5) by a score of 9-3 before finishing the day with a 5-1 win over Findlay (8-2).
Freshman pitcher Tatum Dunlavy didn't allow an earned run in the win over Findlay. She pitched all seven innings while allowing five hits and five walks. Dunlavy tallied three strikeouts for the fourth time this season.
Sydney Pelzer and Alexis Monty led the team in batting with three hits and an RBI each. Pelzer also tallied a double. Katie Klotz and Rachel Novak each had two hits with a double.
The Golden Bears wrap up THE Spring Games on Friday, March 7 against Ohio Dominican (4-6) and Northwood (Mich.) (2-2). The times for those games have changed to 11 a.m. and 1:15 p.m., respectively. Both games are at the Sleepy Hollow complex in Leesburg, Florida.
CSP vs Ashland
The Golden Bears struck first with singles by Monty and Pelzer to start the game with a 1-0 lead. Monty stole second and third to get into scoring position. After Pelzer got to third on a passed ball, Novak hit a single to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Eagles responded in the second inning, starting with a solo homer by Danielle Robbins. They scored three more runs from two singles and two CSP errors, taking a 4-2 lead.
Concordia added a run in the bottom of the second. Klotz led off with a double and stole third. Monty brought her in on an RBI single.
Ashland then scored a run in the third, fourth and fifth innings. The Eagles used two RBI triples and one RBI single to extend the lead to 7-3. Delaney Lis hit another RBI triple and Maren Metikosh hit an RBI single in the seventh inning for the 9-3 advantage.
Monty and Novak led the Golden Bears with two hits and one RBI each. Pelzer had a hit and an RBI. Monty finished the game with three stolen bases.
Erica McCullough picked up the loss starting on the mound. She pitched 3.0 innings giving up five hits and three earned runs. Emmy Bowne pitched the final 4.0 innings giving up eight hits and four earned runs. Both pitchers tallied one strikeout.
Ashland outhit Concordia 13-6. The Golden Bears committed two errors with the Eagles committing one. Ashland left six runners on base while CSP left five on base.
CSP vs Findlay
With the score tied at 1-1, CSP exploded in the sixth inning scoring four runs. After Bryleigh Dana walked and Klotz singled, freshman Ava Blake hit a 2RBI single to take a 3-1 lead.
A few plays later, Lily Burke singled putting her on first and pinch runner Haley Knoblauch on third. Knoblauch then stole home for the 4-1 advantage. Monty reached on a fielding error by the Oiler second baseman, bringing Burke home and extending the lead to 5-1.
CSP scored the first run of the game in the third inning. Emily Knoblauch hit a single to center field and Pelzer brought her home on a double down the left-field line. Knoblauch had some help with a fielding error by the Oiler left fielder to make it home.
The Oilers tied the game up in the fourth inning, reaching via a walk and two fielder's choices. Avery Flynn hit a two-out RBI single to tie the game.
Dunlavy pitched all seven innings to improve her record to 4-3 on the season. She allowed five hits, five walks and 0 earned runs. Dunlavy threw three strikeouts.
Alexys Antal picked up her first loss of the season for the Oilers. She gave up seven hits, three earned runs and three walks in 5.1 innings. She tallied two strikeouts. Kayla Dykin pitched the final 1.2 innings giving up a hit with a team-high three strikeouts.
Both teams had two errors. CSP left seven runners on base while Findlay left nine runners on base. The Golden Bears outhit the Oilers 8-5.
Last season the Golden Bears lost to Findlay, 10-0. This was one of two losses CSP suffered at THE Spring Games. The Golden Bears are now 4-2 all-time vs. the Oilers.
