LEESBURG, Fla. - The Concordia-St. Paul softball team (7-13) finished 6-6 at THE Spring Games after defeating Ohio Dominican (4-7) and losing to Northwood (Mich.) (5-3). Sophomore pitcher Emmy Bowne threw her second shutout of the season in Florida in the 3-0 win over ODU.Â
Bowne only allowed one hit while pitching all seven innings. She threw three strikeouts and three walks. Emily Knoblauch tallied two hits and scored a run. Ava Blake and Riley Rosenthal had RBIs.Â
Rosenthal was the top hitter in CSP's 7-6 loss to Northwood. She had two hits including a double while scoring two runs and batting in another. Rosenthal finished the day batting .400 and had the only extra-base hit for the Golden Bears. Knoblauch added a hit against the Timberwolves to finish the day with three total.Â
CSP finishes 6-6 in 12 games at THE Spring Games. The Golden Bears are 36-15 in their last five seasons competing in Florida.Â
The Golden Bears will have a week off before returning to the Midwest to face Nebraska Kearney (8-8) on Friday, March 14 at 4 p.m. in Joplin, Missouri. CSP will then face Missouri Southern (12-8) and Pittsburg State (13-5) in doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday. Â
CSP vs Ohio Dominican
The Golden Bears scored the first run in the opening inning, led off by an Alexis Monty single. After Monty stole second, Bryleigh Dana hit the ball through the legs of the shortstop for an error. Monty quickly went through third base and found her way home.Â
After the Panthers tallied their lone hit in the third inning, CSP picked up a double play on a sacrifice bunt. Bowne threw a three-pitch strikeout to end the inning.Â
Knoblauch started the bottom of the third with a single and Monty reached on a fielder's choice with Knoblauch getting to second via another error. After they both stole a base, Rosenthal brought Knoblauch home with a sacrifice fly for the 2-0 advantage.Â
The Golden Bears added an insurance run in the sixth inning. Sydney Pelzer started the inning with a single and Ashlyn Peterson stole a base pinch running for her. A few plays later, Blake brought Peterson home with an RBI single up the middle.Â
CSP got three straight batters out in the bottom of the seventh via a lineout and two groundouts. This marked Bowne's second shutout of the season as she also had one on Monday, March 3 against Franklin Pierce. This is the third shutout of her career. Her three strikeouts tied a season-high and her one hit allowed was a season-best.Â
Knoblauch's two hits led the team while Blake and Rosenthal each finished with an RBI. The Golden Bears tallied five hits as a team and were never walked. ODU committed two errors while CSP committed one. Both teams left four runners on base.Â
CSP vs Northwood
Rosenthal singled, Pelzer reached on a fielder's choice and Dana reached on an error to load the bases in the opening inning. Rosenthal and Pelzer scored after Rachel Novak reached on another fielding error by the Timberwolves, giving CSP a 2-0 early lead.Â
After Northwood added a run in the bottom of the first, CSP got the scoring going in the second inning. Lily Burke, Knoblauch and Monty started with three straight singles to load the bases. Rosenthal walked to bring in the first run of the inning.Â
After that, Pelzer reached on another fielding error by the Northwood third baseman to lead, 4-1. Dana then walked with the bases loaded for the 5-1 advantage.Â
The Timberwolves kept the game close in the bottom of the second inning. Delanie Gale tallied a 2RBI double, cutting the lead to 5-3. A CSP error allowed Gale to score and trim the lead to one run.Â
The score remained that way until the bottom of the fifth inning. Gale hit a leadoff triple to immediately put her in scoring position. A few plays later, CSP attempted to go for a double play, allowing Gale to score and tie the game at 5-5.
Rosenthal didn't let CSP go down easily, hitting a double to right center in the sixth. Dana brought her in on another fielding error by Northwood, giving CSP a 6-5 lead.Â
The Timberwolves finally claimed the lead in the bottom of the sixth. After two flyouts and a walk, Ashlyn Lundquist tallied a two-out single to put runners on second and third. Gale smacked another hit with a 2RBI single for the 7-6 advantage. CSP got a runner on second in the seventh inning, but was unable to convert.Â
Gale finished with four hits and four RBIs for the Timberwolves. Lundquist tallied three hits. Both of them combined for seven of Northwood's nine hits. The Golden Bears ended the game with five hits.Â
Rosenthal led the team tallying two hits, two runs scored, a walk and an RBI. Monty, Burke and Knoblauch each had a hit. Pelzer, Dana and Novak all had RBIs.Â
Tatum Dunlavy pitched five innings giving up seven hits, five runs and three earned runs. She didn't throw a walk or a strikeout. Erica McCullough picked up the loss pitching in the final inning. She gave up two earned runs on two hits and a walk.Â
There were nine errors in the game with six by Northwood and three by Concordia. The Golden Bears left nine runners on base while the Timberwolves left five runners on base. CSP was walked three times and Northwood was walked once.
