Golden Bears falter at No. 5 Maryville

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse team (3-2) fell 24-4 to the Saints of No. 5 Maryville in a Tuesday afternoon game at the Maryville University Lacrosse Field in St. Louis, Mo. 

Four Golden Bears found the net in the loss including Anna FIsher who scored her team-leading 18th goal of the season. 

Junior Kayleigh Nelson led the Navy and Gold scoring her fourth goal of the season and tallying two assists to record a team-high three points against the Saints.

The Saints got off to a hot start, scoring the first six goals of the day to put the Golden Bears in an early deficit. 

With two minutes to play in the first quarter, Sara Kaiser scored the first CSP goal with an assist by Susie Monson to bring the score 6-1. 

Maryville was able to score two more goals in the final minutes to increase the lead 8-1 going into the second quarter. 

It was all Saints in the second quarter, going on a seven-goal scoring spree to end the first half in their favor 15-1. 

Freshman Katie Colleran got her first collegiate start in the net, making a season-high four saves. Goalie Marge Lucio came in the net at the start of the third quarter in relief of Colleran. She made two saves to bring her season total to 10. 

The Golden Bears came out with a fast start to the third quarter, just 27 seconds into the quarter Nelson scored from Monson. 

Three minutes later Fisher scored to give the Navy and Gold their first back-to-back goals of the game and try to get back in the game. 

The Saints rifled off a trio of goals to take back the reins and pad their lead 18-3 going into the fourth quarter. 

Once again it was all Maryville to start the fourth quarter, another trio of goals to put the Golden Bears into a big deficit. 

Sydney Smith scored her seventh goal of the season to give CSP one more goal with an assist by Nelson.

Another trio of goals in the final fourth quarter minutes gave Maryville the 24-4 win and marked the largest defeat of the season for Concordia. 

CSP tallied just 12 shots to the Saints 39 and were unable to control the ball, recording a season-high 20 turnovers. 

The Golden Bears will return to action on Thursday Mar. 6 to face the Bearcats of McKendree in Lebanon, Ill. to conclude their midwest road trip. Action is set for 4 p.m. at Leemon Field.
