Golden Bears endure cold conditions to defeat Dragons on Saturday

CSP picks up fourth NSIC sweep in 6-5 and 4-1 wins

ST. PAUL, Minn. -. The Concordia-St. Paul softball team (16-19, 2-8 NSIC) battled through 30-degree conditions to pick up its fourth NSIC sweep over MSU Moorhead (10-27, 2-8 NSIC). The Golden Bears won 6-5 in game one and 4-1 in game two. 

Sophomore Emmy Bowne picked up a complete game win in the second contest. She only allowed four hits, 0 earned runs and did not walk any batters. Bowne also tallied two strikeouts. 

Sydney Pelzer continued her strong weekend batting 2-4 with a two-run homer in game one. She also walked in a run for a team-high third RBI. The senior has a team-leading seven home runs, marking the most in a season in her career. 

Senior Rachel Novak led the Golden Bears with three hits on the day. Bryleigh Dana hit a two-run homer in game two and finished the day with two hits. Riley Rosenthal tallied two hits including an RBI double and Alexis Monty had two hits with a triple. 

Tatum Dunlavy picked up the victory pitching in game one. She tallied three strikeouts while giving up seven hits. The freshman improved her record to 7-5. 

The Golden Bears have a quick turnaround as they travel to Mankato on Tuesday, April 1 for a doubleheader against Minnesota State. The Golden Bears split with the Mavericks earlier this season. The first game is set for 2 p.m. at the MSU Softball Complex. 

Game One
The Dragons struck first in the opening inning scoring three ruins via two hits and two walks. After Monty walked in the bottom of the first, Pelzer smacked a home run deep into left field to trail, 3-2. 

Moorhead went 1-2-3 in the second inning and the Golden Bears were able to tie the game in the bottom of it. CSP scored without tallying a hit, as Lily Burke, Monty, Rosenthal and Pelzer all walked for the 3-3 stalemate. 

Novak singled to begin the bottom of the third. An errant throw by the MSUM third baseman brought her all the way home from first base. With Katie Klotz on third base due to the error, Ava Blake grounded out to extend the CSP lead to 5-3. 

Rosenthal doubled in the fourth inning, advanced to third on a passed ball and came home on a wild pitch. The Golden Bears scored in each of the first four innings to gain the 6-3 advantage. 

MSU Moorhead went three up and three down in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. This included a double play in the fifth inning. The Dragons threatened in the seventh led off by a single, double and 2RBI single to trail, 6-5. MSUM lined out to Pelzer at shortstop and she threw to first to get the runner out there on a double play, ending the game. 

Novak was 2-3 in the game and scored a run. Pelzer finished 1-1 with two walks and three RBIs. Rosenthal tallied the only other hit for the Golden Bears. Burke walked twice and scored a run.

Dunlavy threw all seven innings allowing seven hits, three walks and five earned runs. She also tallied three strikeouts and walked one batter outside of the first inning. 

Avery Steffen took the loss for MSU Moorhead pitching 3.1 innings allowing four hits and six walks. Only three of the six runs scored on her were earned. Steffen tallied four strikeouts. 

The Golden Bears were outhit 7-4 and each team committed one error. CSP was walked seven times compared to only three for MSU Moorhead. Concordia left five runners on base while the Dragons left two on base. 

Game Two
After 2.5 scoreless innings, Concordia-St. Paul struck first in the bottom of the third. It started with a leadoff triple by Monty just off the left fielder's glove running up on a tough play. Rosenthal then singled bringing in the first run of the game. 

Later in the inning, Dana smacked a hit near the wall off the MSUM center fielder's glove and out of the ballpark for the home run. The sophomore's fourth home run of the season gave the Golden Bears an early 3-0 advantage. 

MSU Moorhead used two singles and a throwing error to get its only run of the game in the fifth inning. CSP scored in the next half-inning after singles by Dana and Novak. Novak then got into a pickle play between first and second, allowing pinch runner Ashlyn Peterson to score the fourth run of the contest. 

Bowne got the last six outs of the game via three groundouts, a popout, a fielder's choice and a strikeout. The sophomore only allowed four hits while not giving up any earned runs or a walk. She tallied two strikeouts. 

Dana finished batting 2-3 with two RBIs. Pelzer, Novak, Rosenthal and Monty each tallied a hit. Ella Arendt walked twice. 

Brynna Farman picked up the loss for the Dragons. She allowed three earned runs and four hits in 3.1 innings. Farman also tallied two strikeouts. 

CSP outhit MSU Moorhead 6-4 and each team had two errors. Both teams left four runners on base.
