MANKATO, Minn. - The CSP softball team (16-21, 8-4) suffered its second NSIC sweep to Minnesota State (26-12, 10-2 NSIC) in the Maverick All-Sports Dome on Tuesday. The Golden Bears are now 1-3 against the Mavericks this season.
CSP lost 5-3 in game one and 3-1 in game two despite outhitting Minnesota State 15-12 on the day. The Golden Bears left 16 runners combined in both games while the Mavericks left eight runners on base.
Senior Rachel Novak led the Golden Bears batting 3-7 with a double and a home run. Novak scored twice and tallied an RBI on her solo homer in game two.
Bryleigh Dana smacked two hits including a solo homer in game one. Lily Burke finished the day 2-5 with an RBI in game one. Sydney Pelzer went 2-5 and walked twice. Ava Blake and Katie Klotz each tallied two hits while Riley Rosenthal had an RBI.
On the mound, Emmy Bowne did not allow an earned run in four innings pitched with three hits and two strikeouts. She entered in relief in both games. Tatum Dunlavy tallied five strikeouts while allowing two earned runs in game two. Erica McCullough allowed five earned runs in game one while throwing five strikeouts for the second time this season.
Concordia-St. Paul will attempt to rebound in road doubleheaders this weekend against Minnesota Duluth (25-11, 5-3 NSIC) and St. Cloud State (25-11, 4-4 NSIC). The Golden Bears are scheduled to face UMD on Saturday and SCSU on Sunday at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
Game One
The Golden Bears had a bases-loaded no-outs opportunity in the opening inning after two singles and an error. A strikeout and two fielder's choices ended the inning without CSP getting any runs.
After two strikeouts in the bottom of the third, the Mavericks exploded for five runs. Minnesota State used four singles and three batters were hit-by-pitch to score five runs and take the largest lead by either team on the day.
Novak answered in the fourth inning with a leadoff double. Klotz and Blake singled to load the bases and Burke walked for CSP's first run. Rosenthal then hit an RBI single to left field to trail, 5-2. A Pelzer strikeout ended the inning with the bases loaded.
Dana's home run came to lead off the fifth inning, cutting the lead to 5-3. CSP later got runners on first and second with one out but were unable to convert once again. In the seventh inning, Dana and Klotz singled with one out. The Mavericks got the next two batters out to end the game.
The Golden Bears finished the game outhitting Minnesota State 11-6 and the Mavericks committed the only error of the game. CSP left 11 runners on base while MSU left five runners on base.
McCullough picked up the loss on the mound after starting the game and pitching 3.0 innings. She threw five strikeouts for the second consecutive game and allowed five runs on four hits. Bowne pitched 3.0 innings in relief allowing two hits and throwing two strikeouts.
Dana, Pelzer, Klotz and Blake all tallied two hits for the Golden Bears. Rosenthal, Dana and Burke each had an RBI. Izzy Hycnar led the Mavericks with one hit and two RBIs. Minnesota State did not record an extra-base hit.
Sailor Hall grabbed the win on the mound in relief for the Mavericks pitching 3.1 innings with six strikeouts. Her lone earned run was Dana's homer, which was the second batter Hall faced. Brianne Stone started the game pitching 3.2 innings with a strikeout.
Game Two
The game was scoreless until the sixth inning when Novak hit a two-out home run out into left-center field. This marked Novak's third home run of the season, surpassing the most in a season in her career.
The lead didn't last as the Mavericks struck back in the sixth inning with back-to-back singles on Dunlavy. CSP switched to Bowne on the mound and the Mavericks stole second and third base. Hycnar then smacked a 2RBI single up the middle to take the lead.
An error on a bunt advanced Hycnar to third base. Gianna Lara then hit a sacrifice fly into center field for the third run. The Golden Bears went three up three down in the seventh inning, ending the game.
The Mavericks outhit the Golden Bears 6-4 and Concordia committed the only error of the game. CSP was walked four times while MSU was only walked once. The Golden Bears left five runners on base while the Mavericks left three on base.
Novak led the team batting 2-3 with the solo homer. Burke also smacked two singles for the Golden Bears. Lara and Carly Kimmes each had two hits for the Mavericks.
Dunlavy's record fell to 7-6 on the season after the loss. She pitched five innings allowing five hits and two earned runs. She only walked one batter while throwing five strikeouts. This was her fourth consecutive game with three or more strikeouts.
