MINNETONKA, Minn. - Behind a pair of strong starts on the mound and a lineup that produced 21 hits and 10 walks across 12 innings, Concordia-St. Paul (8-12, 4-6 NSIC) scored a sweep on Friday with 7-2 and 12-1 wins over Northern State (4-13, 0-10 NSIC) at Veterans Field at Minnetonka High School.
The two teams will conclude their 4-game conference series on Saturday with a noon doubleheader at Veterans Field.
In each game, Concordia found itself up 4-0 after two innings for its starting pitchers and compiled baserunners throughout the day to post 19 runs, 21 hits and 10 walks while coming to bat six times in each game for 12 total innings of offense.
Leadoff hitter and left fielder
Kal Brohmer had a big day, going 3-6 with four runs, six RBIs and two walks. In game one, he was on base three times with a hit and two walks and scored three times and in game two, he produced a 3-run triple and a 2-run single, going 2-4 with five RBIs.
Bennett McCollow followed him in the lineup in each game, producing a 3-7 afternoon with three extra base hits adding two doubles and a homer, two runs, three RBIs and a walk.
Charlie Harms had a 4-hit day, going 2-4 in each game as he totaled three runs and an RBI in the twin bill.
Concordia's pitching staff received quality starts from both starting pitchers, as
Korey Dahlberg opened the series by allowing two runs on three hits (all singles) in 6.0 innings, striking out four while
Gavin Rusch followed him by allowing an unearned run in 6.0 innings, striking out 10 while walking three and scattering six singles.
The bullpen added a scoreless seventh in each game as
Jack Greenlun and
Caden Carsen combined to face one batter over the minimum with Greenlun working a 1-2-3 seventh in game one while Carsen had a shutout seventh in game two, working around a 1-out double. They each secured a strikeout to end their afternoons, as well.
GAME 1: CSP 7, NSU 2
Kal Brohmer opened the bottom of the first inning of the series with a walk and would score on
Trett Joles' 2-out single for the first lead, as CSP's infield turned a 5-4-3 double play in the top of the first.
In the second, Concordia stepped on the gas with a 3-run frame highlighted by a bases loaded walk to
Noah Juliar with two outs, followed by a 2-run single by
Will Husemann.
Bennett McCollow tacked on a solo homer in the fourth, his sixth of the year, and in the fifth inning, he was the third of three-straight hits, a 1-out triple by
Koby McBroome, an RBI single by Brohmer and an RBI double by McCollow.
McCollow went 2-4 with a double, homer and two RBIs in the game. Juliar was 2-3 with a walk and an RBI and
Charlie Harms was 2-4 with a run.
Korey Dahlberg was in cruise control for CSP, erasing a 1-out walk in the first with the double-play ball, and worked around a leadoff single in the second inning, stranding the runner on the third base. He allowed a 2-out, 2-run single in the third in an inning that he nearly escaped after hitting the leadoff batter and walking the second hitter. Dahlberg, who leads CSP with 10 HBPs on the year, was facing a lineup that had been hit by pitch 36 times in 15 games entering the weekend.
The 2-out, 2-run single would be his only blemish on what ended up being a fine performance. The Wolves only managed three singles against him and only left five on base.
GAME 2: CSP 12, NSU 1
In game two,
Gavin Rusch had to wait until the second inning for his first lead, but he struck out five of his first six outs to grab the momentum from the bump.
After leaving runners on first and second in the opening inning, Concordia rallied immediately in the second as
Charlie Harms delivered an RBI double to score
Eric Berg before an out was recorded.
Koby McBroome followed with a 1-out RBI single to turn the lineup over with
Bennett McCollow producing his second RBI double of the day to set up a
Noah Juliar RBI single and a 4-0 lead.
The Wolves would get an unearned run in the third off Rusch, but he ended the inning on his own with his sixth strikeout to preserve the lead.
Brohmer extended the lead with two outs in the bottom of the third, slugging a bases clearing triple to the gap for a 7-1 lead.
The Wolves used an HBP to open the fourth inning against Rusch, and would load the bases with one out for the top of the lineup. But Rusch induced a pair of flyouts, a foul out to right field and a flyout to center.
Rusch would strike out a pair in the fifth and sixth innings to end his 10-strikeout performance on a high note.
In the fifth, Concordia put the stamp on the contest as the first five batters reached including three singles. McBroome drew a bases loaded walk to turn the lineup over to Brohmer, who produced a 2-run single for a 5-RBI day. He would later score on Husemann's sacrifice fly to give CSP an 11-run lead (12-1).
Brohmer went 2-4 with a run and five RBIs and Harms was 2-4 with two runs and an RBI. Berg went 1-2, drawing two walks and scoring three runs and McBroome was 1-3 with a walk, two runs and two RBIs.
