MINNETONKA, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul baseball team (10-12, 6-6 NSIC) capped off a perfect weekend with a doubleheader sweep of Northern State (4-15, 0-12 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon at Veterans Field.
The wins pulled the Golden Bears back to even in conference play this season and gave Concordia a 55-20 edge in the all-time series against the Wolves. The four-game series sweep was also the first for the Golden Bears under sixth-year Head Coach
Neil Lerner.
The Golden Bear pitching staff put together another strong collective outing, holding the Wolves to five total runs, just three of which were earned, on the day. Starter
Ian Segna picked up his second win of the season in game one, allowing seven hits and just two earned runs with no walks and three strikeouts in six innings of work. Senior
Jack Greenlun logged his first save of the season in the same game, retiring the final three batters with no hits allowed, one walk, and one strikeout to preserve CSP's one-run advantage.
Game two starter
Fritz Meyer also earned the win, allowing just two hits while holding the Wolves scoreless and striking out five in six innings pitched.
Concordia's bats did just enough to lift them to victory in each game, outhitting Northern 9-7, including a pair of extra-base hits, in game one and edging the Wolves once again with a 6-4 hitting advantage in game two, once again logging two doubles in the contest.
Kaden Johnson and
Koby McBroome each swiped one bag in game two for CSP.
Concordia will hit the road for a four-game series at Minnesota Crookston next weekend, with one game on Friday, a doubleheader on Saturday, and another single game on Sunday.
GAME 1: CSP 5, NSU 4
The Wolves struck first in game one, plating one run in the top of the first and adding a pair more in the second to stake a 3-0 lead. Concordia pulled within a single run in the bottom of the second, with
Koby McBroome and
Kal Brohmer each drawing bases-loaded walks to get CSP on the board.
Northern State added another run in the third to go up 4-2, but sophomore
Will Husemann evened things up in the fifth with a double down the left field line that scored both
Noah Juliar and
Bennett McCollow. Juliar came through for the Golden Bears in a big way in the bottom of the sixth, belting a single through the right side to bring
Koby McBroome home for what proved to be the game-winning run.
Juliar led the Concordia bats in game one, going 3-4 at the plate with a run scored and the go-ahead RBI in the sixth. McCollow had the only other multi-hit game for Concordia, going 2-3 with a walk and a run scored.
GAME 2: CSP 4, NSU 1
It was Concordia striking first in game two of the afternoon, with a
Kal Brohmer single scoring both Johnson and
Charlie Harms in the bottom of the fifth after Harms reached on a single and Johnson reached on a throwing error.
McBroome went on to pad the lead in the following inning, singling down the left field line to plate both Harms and
Eric Berg.
Junior
Ollie Yuhas came into the game in a tough spot for the Bears in the eighth, entering with the bases loaded and two outs. With the tying run at the plate, Yuhas managed to get out of the jam with a pop out to the first baseman. Junior
Christian Lindow finished the game in the ninth for Concordia after Yuhas exited with an apparent injury, recording the final two outs, including a game-ending strikeout, after inheriting a runner on second base.
No batter for either team had more than a single hit in game two, with Brohmer and McBroome providing the only scoring for Concordia with their respective 2-RBI singles.
