Golden Bears fall on the road to Missouri Western

Four players found the net in the loss

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse team (4-3) fell 12-5 to the Griffons of Missouri Western on Friday afternoon from Craig Field at Spratt Stadium during game one of their weekend road trip.

Four Golden Bears found the net in today's loss including Sara Kaiser, Kayleigh Nelson, Anna Fisher and Maddie Westberg

It was the Griffons that got the scoring started, scoring the first goal of the game four minutes in to take the 1-0 lead.

Sara Kaiser responded just seconds later with her first goal of the game to even the score with an assist by Jenna Hamann

Missouri Western fired right back to once again take the lead but Kayleigh Nelson was on lock to score her sixth goal of the season to end the first quarter even.

A pair of back-to-back goals to start the second quarter from the Griffon's Sam Pruitt and a third added on by Brooke Tjernlund put the Golden Bears on their heels needing a response to keep the game within reach.

Kaiser scored her second goal of the game to give CSP a breath of life late in the second quarter to go down only by two at the half.

Anna Fisher came out hot from the half, scoring her team-leading 20th goal of the season to get the Navy and Gold within one. Hamann assisting with her second of the game.

Senior Maddie Westberg scored her first goal of the season from Monson to even the score for the second time of the game.

From here on out it was all Griffons, leaving the Golden Bears with nowhere to go and no room to run.

Missouri Western was able to go on a 7-0 run to put any hopes of a comeback out of reach for Concordia.

As a team, MWSU outshot CSP on goal 23-12 and forced 28 turnovers from the Navy and Gold.

Katie Colleran got her third consecutive start in goal, making four saves to bring her season total to 18. Marge Lucio came in midway through the second quarter where she tallied season-high seven saves.

Leading the Golden Bear defense was Natalie Brownfield who recorded four ground balls with four caused turnovers. Claire Flahaven contributed a big stand with two ground balls and three caused turnovers while accumulating four draw controls.

Monson led the team in draw controls with five to bring her season total to 37.

The Golden Bears will look to bounce back on Sunday when facing the Hawks of Quincy in Quincy, Ill. at QU Stadium with action starting at 12 p.m.
