CSP Lacrosse to host William Jewel and Rockhurst this weekend

Action will start on Friday at 6 p.m.

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse team (2-0) is set to host a pair of games this weekend against the Cardinals of William Jewel and the Hawks of Rockhurst at the Concordia Dome.

Action is set to take place Friday Feb. 21 against William Jewel at 6 p.m. and will conclude on Sunday Feb. 23 against Rockhurst with a 12 p.m. start time. 

RECAP OF THE WEEK
The Golden Bears defeated Walsh 15-14 in overtime to win their home-opener at the Concordia Dome on Sunday afternoon/

With today's win, the Golden Bears are 2-0 for the first time since the start of the 2020 season where they started the season with four straight wins and moved to 6-3 all-time in home-openers. 

Syndey Smith highlighted the game, scoring the game-winner for CSP in overtime to mark her first career game-winning goal while also scoring three goals in the win to record her second career hat-trick. 

Senior Anna Fisher continued her dominant season scoring her second consecutive hat-trick, while tallying four goals today to bring her season total to 10. She also recorded three draw controls to bring her season total to seven. 

Midfielder Susie Monson recorded her first hat-trick of the season to bring her career total to ten. She led the team in draw controls with 10 to bring her season total to 15. Monson recorded two assists on top of her exceptional game to lead the team in points with five. 

Junior Kayleigh Nelson saw her best game of her collegiate career, scoring her first hat-trick and tallying one assist to total four points in the game. 

The Golden Bears and Cavaliers played a back-and-forth game to consistently keep both teams on their toes and at no time was one team safe from the other's high powered offense. 19 different lead changes were seen in the game with no team leading for more than six minutes. 

The Golden Bears scored their final goal of regulation with under two minutes of play left to take the lead 14-13 and set their eyes on the outright win. 

Walsh had other plans and forced overtime with 33 seconds left on the clock to grow an already competitive spirit in the Concordia Dome.

With Walsh down a player two minutes into overtime, Smith took control and scored the game-winner off an assist on the fly by Monson. 

Meghan McGowan accumulated a team-high five ground balls.

Marge Lucio started in the net for the Golden Bears, making three saves in the win before Erika Holm entered in the fourth quarter to tally the final two saves in the final seconds to earn the win for the Navy and Gold. 

SEASON LEADERS
Anna Fisher leads the GLIAC in goals per game (5), total goals (10), points per game (5.5) and total points (11). Her goals per game ranks her seventh in NCAA DII. 

Jenna Hamann leads the GLIAC in assists per game with two. 

Suse Monson leads the GLIAC in draw controls per game with 7.5 which ranks her 12th in NCAA DII. 

Natalie Brownfield leads the GLIAC in caused turnovers a game with three which ranks 10th in NCAA DII. 

Meghan McGowan leads the GLIAC in ground balls per game with four.

As a team, the Golden Bears lead the GLIAC in assists per game (6), shots on goal per game (25.5), woman-down goals per game (1) and woman-up goals per game (2.5).

HISTORY BETWEEN CSP AND WJC
The two programs met for the first time last season where the CSP got the 18-6 road win in Liberty, Mo. 

The Golden Bears were led by five goals from Fisher, four from Kennedy Bolander and three from Cayla Jungwirth.

ABOUT THE CARDINALS
William Jewel posted a (1-14, 0-7 GLVC) record in the 2024 season which also marked their inaugural season as a team. They were picked to finish eighth in the GLVC Preseason Coaches' Poll. 

After falling in their season-opener to Benedictine College, the Cardinals have gone on a three game win-streak with wins over Lake Erie College, Thomas More, and Northwood.

The player to watch in Olivia Fornelli who leads the team with eight goals and 13 assists to have 22 points tallied this season. She also is tied for team leader with 10 ground balls and leads the team with 18 draw controls. 

HISTORY BETWEEN CSP AND RHU
The two programs have met a total of six times with CSP holding the 4-2 all-time advantage. The Golden Bears won the first four matchups dating back to March 3, 2017 where they took home the road win 16-12. 

In the past two seasons, the Hawks have cut down the lead and won the last two games both being played in Kansas City, Mo. 

Last season, the Hawks won 16-12 with CSP being led by a four goal game from Monson and a three goal game from Fisher. 

ABOUT THE HAWKS
Rockhurst posted a (9-7, 3-4 GLVC) record in the 2024 season and were picked to finish fourth in the GLVC Preseason Coaches' Poll with 30 points. 

The Hawks currently sit at 1-0 after opening their season with a 14-9 victory at McKendree who the Golden Bears will face in a couple weeks. 

RHU returns 20 of their players along with eight starters this season including Reagan Danner who scored a team leading 28 goals last season.

Flanagan is a St. Paul native with more than 15 years of experience calling Golden Bear athletics for all sports that feature a live webcast.
