Two school records fall for Concordia track and field over the weekend

Nyadio Chan breaks school record in 800m, Del Johnson breaks record in 300m

MANKATO, Minn.  – The Concordia-St. Paul men's and women's track and field teams competed at a pair of meets over the weekend, with two school records falling at the Mark Schuck Open hosted by Minnesota State while a select group of Golden Bears competed at the Washburn Open in Topeka, Kan.

The Mark Schuck Open was a scored meet, with the Concordia men placing third out of 16 teams with 62 points and the women placing seventh out of 20 teams with 41 points.

A pair of school records fell in Mankato, with junior Nyadio Chan clocking a time of 2:19.58 in the 800-meter run to beat Kalle Burney's 2018 record by seven hundredths of a second. On the men's side, freshman Del Johnson set a new program record in the 300-meter dash, clocking a time of 34.87 seconds to beat the previous record of 35.29 seconds set by Tarnue David just last season. Johnson also set a new personal record in the 400-meter dash, finishing in 49.31 seconds to win the event.

Freshman Cam Mata continued to shave time off his sprints, setting a new personal record of 7.04 seconds in the 60-meter dash to place 8th.

A pair of Golden Bear sophomores placed top five in the 500-meter dash, with Vance Landa clocking a personal-best time of 1:08.14 to finish second and Jacob Jensrud finishing in 1:09.93 to place fifth.

Freshman Zay Acosta made his collegiate debut in the 800-meter run, finishing with a time of 2:00.99 to place fifth. Continuing the trend of impressive debuts, freshman Andrew Alexander ran the first 5,000-meter run of his career and finished in 15:57.07 to place sixth.

Junior Dan Otto also set a new personal record, placing fourth in the weight throw with a mark of 16.98 meters (55' 8.5").

Elsewhere at the Washburn Open in Topeka, Kan., senior Drake Daniels finished fourth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.14 seconds. In the prelims, Daniels logged his fastest time this season with an 8.12-second clocking, the fifth fastest in the NSIC this season and tied for 36th fastest in all of Division II

Senior Emmett Faltesek placed 10th in the mile run at the Washburn Open, clocking the fastest time in the NSIC so far this season with a time of 4:09.66 to set a new personal record.

For the women, freshman Addy Nelson competed in the 500-meter dash for the first time in her collegiate career, placing second with a time of 1:26.58.

The CSP relay squad of Karlina Zimmerman, Chidera Osuoha, Nyadio Chan, and Destiny Mattingly competed in the 4x400-meter relay, winning the event with a time of 4:08.67.

Jumper Cadence Tanner had a season best performance in the high jump, clearing 1.61 meters (5' 3.25") to place third.

Junior Maya Lavendusky placed sixth in the shot put with a distance of 12.78 meters (41' 11.25").

The Golden Bears will stay local next weekend, competing at the Gopher Classic hosted by the University of Minnesota on Saturday at the Griak Fieldhouse in Minneapolis, Minn.
