ST. PAUL, Minn. — The No. 24 Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball (5-2, 1-1) team earned its first conference win over St. Cloud State (3-4, 0-2) Thursday night at the Gangelhoff Center. The Golden Bears defeated the Huskies 75-50, in a full team effort that saw nine players find the scoresheet for CSP.
Emma Mommsen led the way with a season and career high 16 points. The junior center was efficient, going 5-of-7 from the field and 6-of-8 from the free throw line. Mommsen grabbed 10 rebounds and came away with a steal and a block on defense as well.
Senior guard Lydia Haack put together another strong performance, tallying 14 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals. Haack hit on 6-of-9 attempts from the field and went 1-of-3 from beyond the arc.
The Golden Bears had two other players with double digits as Lauren Wilson dropped 10 points, going 4-of-6 from the field and grabbing 7 boards. Avery Moeller scored 10 points off the bench, as the sophomore transfer recorded double digit points in back-to-back games.
As a team the Golden Bears went 26-of-53 (49.1%) from the field, including shooting 59% in the second half. On defense CSP limited the Huskies to just 20-of-63 (31.7%) from the field in the win.
Concordia got off to a hot start in the first, jumping out to an 8-0 lead on a Lydia Haack fastbreak layup in the paint. Ashley Schuelke knocked down a three pointer to extend the CSP lead to 11 midway through the first.
St. Cloud closed the gap to four in the second, but back-to-back three balls from Leah Dengerud and Avery Moeller extended the CSP lead to eight. Lauren Wilson drove the lane and found the bucket to give the Golden Bears a 10 point advantage, as Concordia led, 36-25 at the half.
The CSP offense exploded in the third, putting up 25 points, thanks to a 17-4 run, starting with a driving layup from Lauren Wilson. The Golden Bears hit on 72.7% of their shots in the third period, while holding the Huskies to eight points.
The fourth quarter saw CSP put the finishing touches on the win, with Norah Danielson driving the lane for two and Ayana Bousum knocked down a jumper to make it a 75-50 final score.
The Golden Bears were dominant down low, outsourcing the Huskies 42-22 on points in the paint. CSP also had the advantage around the glass, out rebounding St. Cloud 43-32.
Conference play continues, as the Golden Bears head down to Mankato to take on No.2 Minnesota State Saturday afternoon, Dec. 6. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
