Golden Bears suffer road loss to Mavericks

Lauren Wilson recorded her fifth double-double of the season, but it wasn’t enough as CSP fell to Minnesota State in Mankato.

MANKATO, Minn. — The No. 24 Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball (5-3, 1-2) team dropped a road contest to No.2 Minnesota State (9-0, 3-0) Saturday afternoon in Mankato. The Golden Bears tied the game at seven early in the first, but the Mavericks steadily built a lead going on to win 104-66. 

Lauren Wilson recorded her fifth double-double of the season, scoring 19 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. The junior also managed to come away with 2 blocks and 1 steal on defense. 

CSP's other double digit scorer was Lydia Haack, with 13 points, to go along with 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Haack put together a strong shooting performance going 5-of-10 from the field and 2-of-3 from three point range. 

Leah Dengerud tallied 9 points on the day, with 6 rebounds and 2 steals. Ashley Schuelke and Avery Moeller each provided 8 points for CSP as well, with Schuelke going 4-of-9 from the floor. 

The Golden Bears shot 26-of-75 (34.7%) in the afternoon, while the Mavericks were 37-of-79 (46.8%) shooting. 

Leah Dengerud scored the game's opening points, hitting on a jumper from beyond the arc to put CSP up 3-0. Concordia tied the game at seven later in the quarter on a tough Lauren Wilson layup off the glass. 

Minnesota State opened up a 10 point lead with two minutes to play in the quarter, with Lydia Haack cutting the deficit to seven on a three ball. 

CSP kept pace early in the second quarter, with Lauren Wilson driving the lane for two to make it a 28-20 game. But Minnesota State used a 10-4 run to open up a 12 point lead, taking a 45-30 lead into the half. 

The Golden Bears were 3-of-4 from three point range in the third quarter with a pair of threes coming from Lydia Haack and Avery Moeller. But CSP was unable to narrow the gap, facing a 28 point deficit heading into the final period. With Minnesota State going on to win, 104-66. 

Concordia grabbed 41 rebounds as a team, but couldn't out rebound the Mavericks who grabbed 53 boards. CSP forced 17 Maverick turnovers on the afternoon, coming away with 15 points, the Golden Bears were also good inside, scoring 30 points in the paint. 

The Golden Bears will look to get back on track next Saturday, Dec. 13 when they take on Southwest Minnesota State at the Gangelhoff Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
