Golden Bears set for two game home slate this weekend

The CSP women’s basketball team looks to earn a pair of wins against division opponents at the Gangelhoff Center.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The No. 25 Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team returns to the Gangelhoff Center this weekend for a pair of conference games against NSIC South Division opponents. 

On Saturday night the Golden Bears take on the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m.

Sunday's matchup will see CSP take on the Sioux Falls Cougars, with tip-off set for 4 p.m.

Purchase Tickets in Advance Online
Fans are highly encouraged to purchase tickets online at cspbears.com/tickets prior to game day. All ticketed events for the 25-26 academic year will utilize the Vivenu online ticket platform found at that link and fans must scan a mobile ticket to enter. Tickets will still be sold on site on game day but purchases are card-only and include additional fees. The best way for fans to make their game day entry as smooth as possible is to purchase tickets online in advance. CSP Students, Faculty and Staff will be able to download their free passes through Vivenue.

CSP Basketball Coaches' Show 
The CSP Basketball Coaches' Show is in its first season on Twin Cities airwaves, hosted by Wally Langfellow of Minnesota Score. The show airs on AM 1440 KYCR with weekly interviews from women's basketball head coach Amanda Johnson and men's basketball head coach Matt Fletcher. 

Fans who miss the show or are outside the radio station's Twin Cities reach can access the show via the CSP Bears Podcast, available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Stitcher and Youtube Podcasts. It will typically be uploaded late Friday night (after the initial air time) or Saturday morning. Search 'CSP Bears' into your favorite podcast provider. 

Last Time Out 
The Golden Bears earned a 1-1 split across two NSIC contests last week against St. Cloud State and No.2 Minnesota State. 

On Wednesday night CSP improved to 5-2 on the season and earned their first conference win of the season, 75-50 over the St. Cloud State Huskies. 

Emma Mommsen recorded a career high 16 points in the win, with the junior center grabbing 10 rebounds. Mommsen was an efficient 5-of-7 from the field and 6-of-8 from the free throw line in the win. 

Senior guard Lydia Haack tallied 14 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists, while recording 2 steals on defense. Haack put together a solid shooting performance hitting on 6-of-9 shots from the floor and going 1-of-3 from beyond the arc. 

Two other Golden Bears put together double digit point totals in the win, with Lauren Wilson recording double digits for the seventh time this season. Avery Moeller provided 10 points off the bench, to record double digits in back-to-back games. 

CSP held a 36-25 lead at the half, before exploding in the third, outscoring the Huskies 25-8 and shooting 72.7% from the field. Rolling to an easy 25 point victory in the fourth and improving to 1-1 in conference play. 

The Golden Bears hit the road Saturday to face off against the No.2-ranked Minnesota State Mavericks. CSP kept pace early, tying the game at seven midway through the first, but the Mavericks steadily built a lead going on to win, 104-66. 

Lauren Wilson tallied her fifth double-double of the season with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Lydia Haack turned in a strong performance as well, going 5-of-10 from the field for 13 points while grabbing 5 rebounds and recording 5 assists. 

Senior guard Leah Dengerud also scored 9 points with 6 rebounds and 2 steals. Ashley Schuelke and Avery Moeller each provided 8 points as well. 

Golden Bears by the Numbers 
CSP currently ranks second in the NSIC and 23rd nationally in scoring offense averaging 76.6 points per game through eight games this season. Defensively the Golden Bears are holding opponents to an average of 71.1 ppg. 

As a team the Golden Bears are shooting 40.9% from the field this season, placing them 11th in the NSIC. While holding opponents to the fifth lowest field goal percentage at 39.2%. 

From three point range the Golden Bears have converted on 31.7% of their attempts, while opponents are shooting 35.7% from beyond the arc against CSP this season. 

Concordia has been strong around the glass this season, averaging 42.1 rebounds per game as a team this season. Ranking second in the NSIC in combined team rebounds slightly behind Augustana at 42.4. 

On defense CSP ranks second in the NSIC with 4.25 blocked shots per game, while ranking fifth in the conference in steals with 9.38 per game. 

Lauren Wilson leads the Golden Bears in scoring, averaging 22.5 ppg this season. Placing her third in the NSIC and fifth nationally in ppg. Wilson leads the NSIC in rebounding, averaging 11.5 boards per game, good for 15th in Division II. 

Lydia Haack is averaging 16.3 ppg this season, second on the team behind Wilson and good for 10th in the NSIC. Haack is second on the team in rebounds as well, averaging 6.4 rpg, which ranks 15th in the NSIC. Haack leads the conference in assists by a wide margin at 7.3 per game, the next closest is 5.6 apg. Haack's 7.3 apg place her second in all of Division II. 

Leah Dengerud is averaging double digits at 10.8 ppg so far this season, Avery Moeller is third on the team at 8.1 ppg off the bench this season. Emma Mommsen and Ashley Schuelke are averaging 6.8 and 6.0 ppg respectively. 

Mommsen also ranks third on the team with an average of 4.9 rebounds per game, with Dengerud in fourth at 4.1. 

Leading the way in shooting this season is Lauren Wilson at 48.8% going 60-of-123 from the field to lead the team in shot attempts. Wilson currently sits in eighth place in the NSIC in shooting percentage. 

Haack is second on the team in shot attempts, going 47-of-112 to rank third on the team in shooting percentage at 42%. Emma Mommsen is second on the team in field goal percentage at 47.1% going 24-of-51 from the field. 

Avery Moeller is shooting 41.1% off the bench this season, going 23-of-56 from the floor. 

From three point range, Haack has led the way hitting on 41.7% of her three point attempts, going 15-of-36 from beyond the arc. Avery Moller has hit on 16-of-43 (37.2%) three point attempts this season, good for fifth in the NSIC in three point percentage. Leah Dengerud is eighth in the NSIC in three-point shooting going 20-of-57 (35.1%) this season. 

Leading the team in blocked shots in Lauren Wison with 1.1 per game, good for fourth in the NSIC. Ashley Schuelke and Emma Mommsen are each averaging 1.0 blocks per game placing them sixth and seventh in the conference. 

Lydia Haack is averaging 2.9 steals per game, leading CSP and ranking third in the NSIC. 

Series History: Southwest Minnesota State

Series Record: CSP 46, SMSU 22
The Golden Bears have an extensive matchup history, spanning 68 games across 50 years. With the first game between the schools taking place in February of 1975. The Mustangs took eight of the first 12 matchups, but since the turn of the century the Golden Bears have the upper hand with a 42-14 record with two separate 15+ game win streaks and a 38-13 record in conference games. 

Last season CSP and SMSU faced off twice, once during the regular season and once in the NCAA Central Region Quarterfinals. 

Concordia took the first matchup of the season on Dec. 7, 2024 in Marshall, Leah Dengerud posted a career-high 18 points as the Golden Bears earned a 72-58 victory. 

CSP trailed by four at the half, but the Golden Bears came out firing in the third using a 15-2 run to take a 68-45 lead into the final quarter of play. Defense was pivotal as CSP forced 18 SMSU turnovers, coming away with 14 steals and 22 points off turnovers. 

Lindsay Becher and Julia Bengston tallied 15 and 13 points in the win, with Lydia Haack scoring 10 with 7 rebounds, 3 assists and a career-high 6 steals. 

The Mustangs took the second matchup of the season in the Central Region Quarterfinals. The score remained close throughout with the Golden Bears trailing 40-39 in the third quarter, but a pivotal 17-2 run by SMSU put CSP down 16 heading into the final quarter. 

Despite 23 points from Lydia Haack, CSP was unable to close the gap falling to SMSU, 77-64. Lindsey Becher scored 13 points in the loss, with Ashley Schuelke scoring 10 off the bench. 

About the Mustangs
SMSU is off to a 4-4 start to the 2025-26 season, with a 2-1 start to conference play after earning a pair of wins over Augustana and Wayne State last week. The Mustangs are currently in the middle of the pack in the NSIC, tied with UMary, Bemidji State, Jamestown and Winona State at 2-1. 

As a team the Mustangs are averaging 71.4 points per game this season, which ranks seventh in the NSIC. SMSU also places seventh in scoring defense, allowing an average of 65.5 ppg.

On the glass the Mustangs are seventh in the NSIC in rebounding averaging 39.4 rebounds per game this season. On defense the Mustangs rank 10th in the conference in blocked shots at 2.38 per game and 14th in steals with 5.75 per game. 

Audrey Swanson leads the Mustangs in scoring through eight games this season, with the senior forward averaging 16.9 ppg, good for eighth in the NSIC. Nicole Maenke isn't far behind, averaging 15.9 ppg, Kylan Gerards is averaging 13.1 and Natalie Nielsen is the fourth Mustang averaging double digits at 10.0.

Nielsen leads the team in rebounding with 10.0 rebounds per game, placing her third in the NSIC in rebounds per game. Swanson is second on the team and eighth in the conference at 7.3 rpg. Kylan Gerards is averaging 6.8 boards a game, which ranks 11th in the NSIC. 

Kylan Gerards is the Mustangs leading shooter hitting on 40-of-88 (45.5%) shots from the field, this season. Natalie Nielsen is shooting 45.5% as well, with Allie Haabala going 12-of-26 (46.2%) off the bench. 

Brynn Busse leads SMSU in three point shooting, going 13-of-31 (41.9%) from three, Gerards is shooting 40.6% from beyond the arc, going 13-of-32. 

Tom Webb is in his 10th season as head coach of the Mustangs, posting a 124-119 record in that span. 

Series History: Sioux Falls

Series Record: CSP 19, USF 8 
In 27 meetings dating back to 2012, the Golden Bears hold a 19-8 record over the Cougars. CSP won each of the first six matchups against USF from 2012 to 2015. 

The Golden Bears currently hold a nine game winning streak over the Cougars dating back to January of 2021, with CSP taking both games against Sioux Falls last season. 

In the first meeting of the season Julia Bengtson dropped a career-high 28 points as the Golden Bears moved to 8-0 on the season with a 79-63 victory. 

The game was tied at 15 through one quarter of play, with the Golden Bears using a 9-0 run to open up a 34-22 advantage. CSP scored 30 points in the third to extend the lead to 24 points. 

Lydia Haack contributed 11 points and 6 rebounds in the 16 point win, Lindsey Becher recorded a 14 point, 10 rebound double-double. Ashley Schuelke provided 8 points off the bench in the win. 

The Golden Bears and Cougars met once more last season in a Feb. 6 matchup at the Gangelhoff Center. Lydia Haack tied a career-high with 30 points as CSP defeated Sioux Falls, 82-74. 

Concordia trailed only once, 45-40 in the third quarter with the Golden Bears going 4:20 without a field goal. CSP got hot after that, going on a 16-2 run, rolling to an eight point victory. 

Leah Dengerud and Lindsey Becher each tallied 14 points in the win, with Becher recording seven blocked shots in the win.

About the Cougars 
Sioux Falls is off to a 6-2 start this season, with a 3-0 conference record after defeating Wayne State and Augustana last week. USF currently sits in a three-way tie atop the NSIC with Minnesota State and Minnesota Duluth. 

The Cougars currently rank third in the NSIC in scoring offense, averaging 74.9 points per game this season. USF is 10th in the NSIC in scoring defense allowing an average of 66.9 ppg. 

Sioux Falls ranks 11th this season averaging 38.4 rebounds per game this season, opponents are averaging 36.4 rpg against the Cougars this season ranking ninth in the conference. 

As a team the Cougars are shooting 44.9% from the field, good for second in the NSIC. Sioux Falls ranks seventh in opponent field goal percentage at 39.7%. From beyond the arc the Cougars are shooting 35.7% this season, good for second in the NSIC. Opponents are shooting 30.8% from three point range this season against Sioux Falls. 

USF ranks 13th in the NSIC in blocked shots per game with 2.13, ranking sixth in the conference in steals with 9.00 per game. 

Anna Vaaler is the Cougars leading scorer this season averaging 22.9 ppg, placing her second in the conference and fifth nationally in scoring. Krista Langager is second on the team in scoring with 12.0 ppg, Alexis Rose is USF's other double digit scorer at 11.4 ppg. 

Vaaler also leads the Cougars in rebounding at 8.8n rpg this season, which ranks fourth in the NSIC. Langager is second on the team with 6.3 rpg and Brown is averaging 5.1 rpg. 

Ayla Brown ranks second in the NSIC and 10th this season, averaging 5.6 assists per game for Sioux Falls. 

Langager leads the Cougars in shooting percentage, hitting 42-of-79 (53.2%) shots from the field, which ranks fourth in the NSIC. Vaaler is 63-of-138 (45.7%) from the field and leads the team in three point shooting, going 24-of-54 (44.4%) from three, which ranks second in the conference. 

Rose and Brown are shooting 44.3% and 42.6% from the field this season. With Rose hitting on 34.5% of her attempts from three. 

Travis Traphagen is in his 18th season as the head coach of the Cougars, with a career record of 301-187 in that span.
