ST. PAUL, Minn. – Fueled by an explosive offensive effort and a 12-4 blocking edge at the net, the No. 9 Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (20-4) secured a four-set win over No. 10 St. Cloud State (19-6) in a high-profile non-conference match on Tuesday evening at the Gangelhoff Center.
A significant advantage on offense helped the Golden Bears lock down the marquee victory, as they logged an impressive .349 hitting percentage with 64 kills and just 11 errors on 152 total swings, while limiting the Huskies to .204 hitting with 50 kills and 19 errors on 152 attacks. CSP also led in both assists (60–48) and digs (72–66).
Sophomore
Makenna Nold paced the Golden Bears with 18 kills, 13 digs, and four block assists. Junior
Mehlayna Straub dominated at the net with 15 kills on an incredible .636 clip while tying her career high with eight block assists. Senior
Ellie Sieling was steady throughout with 14 kills, nine digs, and two block assists.
Freshman
Kaelyn Snoozy added nine kills and two block assists, while junior
Julia Gordon chipped in seven kills and four block assists.
Setters
Audrey Waterman and
Reagan Hickey once again directed the offense efficiently, combining for 50 assists. Waterman tallied 25 assists, five digs, two service aces, and four block assists, while Hickey matched her with 25 assists and eight digs.
The defensive duo of
Cassie Sieling and
Natalee Rolbiecki steadied the back row for Concordia, with Sieling tallying 17 digs and five assists and Rolbiecki adding 14 digs and one assist.
After breaking an early 7-7 tie, the Golden Bears cruised through the remainder of the opening frame behind a blistering .667 hitting percentage, with Nold, Straub, and Sieling combining for 16 of the team's 20 kills in a 25-15 win. St. Cloud State responded in the second with its best offensive set of the night, hitting .324 and limiting the Bears to a .084 clip to even the match 1-1.
Concordia regained control in the third, racing out to a 7-0 start on the serve of Rolbiecki and never looking back in a 25-16 victory. The fourth set was the most competitive of the evening, with Concordia holding a 13-11 edge near the midpoint. A run of five straight CSP points followed, putting the Golden Bears comfortably in front at 18-11. A 6-2 run by the Huskies cut the deficit to just three at 20-17, but a pair of kills from Snoozy, an ace from Straub, and two SCSU attack errors followed over the next seven serves to close out the match 25-18 and secure Concordia's ninth straight win.
For St. Cloud State, Shelby Kimm led the Huskies with 14 kills and 10 digs, while Ella Thompson added 12 kills and two blocks. Setter Braya LaPlant dished out 47 assists, and libero Laurin Hamann recorded 19 digs and four service aces.
The Golden Bears will play their final home matches of the regular season this weekend, hosting Minnesota Crookston (6-18, 0-16 NSIC) on Friday evening and MSU Moorhead (14-11, 7-9 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon at the Gangelhoff Center.
