Haack’s heroics not enough as Golden Bears come up just short at home, 77-75

The Golden Bears battled back to tie it late but were unable to take down the Warriors in overtime.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The No.16 Concordia-St. Paul (3-2, 0-1) women's basketball team dropped a back-and-forth battle at the Gangelhoff Center Tuesday night against Winona State (3-3, 1-0). The game saw seven lead changes and an overtime period with the Warriors coming away with a narrow two point win over the Golden Bears, 77-75.

Lauren Wilson was CSP leading scorer on the night, with 19 points, rebounds and 5 assists. The junior forward was nearly perfect at the free throw line as well, going 9-of-10 (90%) on the night.

Concordia's other standout scorer was Lydia Haack, who put together a 18 point, 8 rebound, 9 assist performance. The senior came up with the most pivotal bucket of the night for CSP as well, a half-court jumper in the waning seconds of the fourth to send the game to overtime.

Haack went 6-of-14 from the field and 4-of-4 at the charity stripe for the Golden Bears, while pressuring the Warriors and coming away with 6 steals on defense.

Emma Mommsen and Leah Dengerud each tallied double digits as well, with 12 points each. Avery Moeller provided 6 points off the bench, going 2-0f-3 from beyond the arc.

The Golden Bears opened the home contest strong, grabbing a quick 7-0 lead and building it to a 10-2 advantage on a Leah Dengerud three ball. Closing the quarter with a five point lead on an Avery Moeller three pointer.

Winona State paced Concordia in the second tying the game at 23 near the midway mark of the period. A Emma Mommsen jumper from the paint kickstarted an 8-0 run for CSP, capped off with a steal and fastbreak layup by Ashley Schuelke as the Golden Bears took a 33-27 lead into the half.

With the game tied at 38 in the third Lauren Wilson came up with a crucial bucket for Concordia, knocking down a jumper from the paint to regain the lead. Dengerud closed the quarter with a three pointer to make it a 48-47 Winona lead entering the final period of regulation.

The final quarter of regulation was a back-and-forth affair with the Warriors grabbing 56-53 lead early on. Lauren Wilson went to the line on two separate occasions late, making all four of her free throw attempts to give CSP a one point lead.

Down by three with less than 10 seconds to play, CSP inbounded the ball getting it to Haack, who sprinted to half court to heave a desperation shot. The ball went in with seconds to go, tying the game at 64.

Haack once again knocked down her free throw attempts, and a jumper in the paint to give CSP a 72-71 lead with less than a minute in the overtime period. Leah Dengerud came up with another big three ball with 11 seconds to play, but the Warriors answered, scoring the final three points and going on to win, 77-75.

As a team the Golden Bears went 25-of-65 (38.5%) from the field and 15-of-18 (83.3%) from the free throw line. The Warriors were 30-of-75 (40%) shooting on the night.

The Golden Bears are back at the Gangelhoff Center after the Thanksgiving holiday for an out of conference matchup against Michigan Tech on Black Friday, Nov. 28. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
