ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The No. 17 Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team (3-1) capped off a 2-0 road trip with a 82-69 win over Maryville (3-1) on Friday afternoon. Lydia Haack scored 20+ points for the second game in a row as the Golden Bears extended their winning streak to three in the early going.
The senior guard put together a strong all around performance, dropping 23 points along with 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals and 1 block. Haack went 7-of-15 from the field and 3-of-6 from beyond the arc, while going 6-of-9 at the free throw line.
Lauren Wilson turned in her third double-double in four games this season, scoring 18 points and grabbing 14 boards. The junior forward also tallied 4 assists and 2 blocks in the win, while going 12-of-16 from the charity stripe.
Two other Golden Bears tallied double digit points, as Leah Dengerud and Ashley Schuelke each scored 11. Emma Mommsen scored 6 points and grabbed 9 boards in the post, while providing 3 assists. Avery Moeller provided 9 points off the bench, shooting 3-of-5 from three.
As a team CSP went 24-of-58 (41.4%) from the field and 12-of-30 (40%) from three. At the line the Golden Bears were 21-of-30 (70%) as a team. The Saints were limited to just 20-of-71 (28.2%) from the field, while shooting 13-of-34 (38.2%) from three.
With the game tied at eight in the early going, Ashley Schuelke knocked down a big three to break the tie. As the Golden Bears closed out the first period with a four point advantage.
In the second the CSP lead grew to seven after Lauren Wilson was fouled on a three point attempt. Wilson made all three attempts at the line to give Concordia a 23-26 lead.
Later in the quarter the Golden Bears grabbed a double-digit lead on a Wislson layup in the lane, drawing the foul again and making the subsequent free throw attempt to go up 11.
The lead grew to 16 on an Avery Moeller three ball off the bench, capping a 20-5 run for the Navy and Gold. CSP carried a 15 point lead into the halftime break, 38-23.
Lydia Haack hit from three to open the second half to expand the lead to 18. Maryville narrowed the deficit to five at the midway point of the third before Leah Dengerud knocked down a big three ball, as CSP closed out the quarter up 59-46.
Dengerud came up with another crucial three at the midway point of the fourth to put CSP up by double digits. As the Golden Bears went on to win by a score of 81-69.
Concordia once again won around the glass, out rebounding the Saints 48-40. The Golden Bears also capitalized inside with 22 points in the paint compared to Maryville's 12.
The Golden Bears look to continue their winning ways as they head home for a matchup with conference foe Winona State next Tuesday, Nov. 25. Tip-off of the home opener is set for 6 p.m. at the Gangelhoff Center.
