Wilson’s 27 point performance powers Golden Bears past Griffons

Concordia grabs its first win of the season behind Lauren Wilson’s 27 point, 14 rebound night.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — For the second straight night Lauren Wilson turned in a double-double performance as the Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team (1-1) rolled to a 78-64 win over Missouri Western (1-3) Saturday night at Civic Arena. 

Junior forward Lauren Wilson dropped 27 points to go along with 14 rebounds, shooting an efficient 11-for-17 from the field including 4-for-6 from beyond the arc. Senior guard Lydia Haack also turned in a double-double, with 11 points and a career high 12 assists. 

Leah Dengerud scored 16 points, going 5-for-11 from the floor. Avery Moeller came up big off the bench, the sophomore transfer dropped 10 points and grabbed 3 boards in the win. 

The Golden Bears grabbed a 8-4 lead midway through the first on a Lauren Wilson layup, with Avery Moeller hitting a fastbreak three pointer to extend the lead to 12-4 later in the first quarter. 

A pair of three point makes from Wison and Lydia Haack extended the Golden Bear advantage to 22-11 early in the second quarter. Ashley Schuelke came away with a steal and Lydia Haack converted another three point jumper to open up a 15 point CSP lead. 

The Golden Bear lead climbed as high as 19 on a Avery Moeller fastbreak layup in the paint, with the CSP taking a 41-27 lead into the break. 

In the second half Concordia picked up right where they left off, with Leah Dengerud hitting on the fastbreak three-pointer this time to make it 44-27. 

CSP continued to stay hot from beyond the arc as Leah Dengerud opened the final quarter with another three ball to maintain the double digit lead. Avery Moeller grabbed another three point bucket to make it a 66-49 game with seven minutes to play 

The Golden Bear bench got in on the action late as Lauren Feddema and Ayana Bousum each hit from three to put the finishing touches on a 78-64 CSP victory. 

As a team the Golden Bears went 29-72 (40.3%) from the field, going 14-37 (37.8%) from beyond the arc. While the Griffons went 25-65 (38.5%) from the field and 8-23 (34.8%) from three. 

In the second half CSP hit in 50% of their three-point attempts, as the Golden Bears held onto the lead and never relented. As the score was tied just once and the game saw zero lead changes. 

CSP was solid around the glass, outrebounding Missouri Western 52-35. 

The Golden Bears continue their out of conference slate with a matchup against Truman in Kirksville, Missouri on Thursday afternoon, Nov. 20. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
