JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Sophomore
Makenna Nold logged her 10
th double-double of the season to lead the No. 9 Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (19-4, 15-1 NSIC) past the University of Jamestown (9-14, 4-12 NSIC) in straight sets at Harold Newman arena on Saturday afternoon.
Nold finished the match with 16 kills, 10 digs, and three block assists for a total of 17.5 points. Junior
Mehlayna Straub contributed nine kills and a block assist for 9.5 points, while freshman
Kaelyn Snoozy had another strong outing with nine kills and one block assist.
Senior
Ellie Sieling filled the stat sheet with eight kills, 11 digs, and two service aces, totaling 10 points on the day. Sophomore
Kelsey Cooper added four kills on .571 hitting, a solo block, and a block assist.
Setters
Reagan Hickey and
Audrey Waterman paced the offense well, combining for 40 assists throughout the match. Hickey collected 17 assists and four digs, while Waterman led the way with 23 assists and four digs.
Defensively, libero
Cassie Sieling steadied the back row with 17 digs, four assists, and a service ace, while senior
Natalee Rolbiecki added eight digs and an ace of her own.
As a unit, Concordia hit .284 with 49 kills, 16 errors, and 116 total attacks, while holding Jamestown to .149 hitting with 33 kills and 16 errors on 114 attacks. The Golden Bears also boasted a 44-25 advantage in assists and outdug the Jimmies 56-41.
The Bears shook off a few early ties in the opening frame before going on a 7-1 run to create a 16-10 lead. The Bears remained in the drivers' seat for the remainder of the set, closing it out 25-16 behind Nold's four kills and a balanced attack that hit .333 in the frame.
The Jimmies came out hot in the second set as they worked out to an early 12-7 lead, but the Golden Bears responded with an 8-1 run to take a 15-13 lead of their own. The Jimmies managed to tie the set twice soon after at 16-16 and 19-19, but that proved to be all they could do as Concordia hung on for a 25-22 set win.
In the third set, Concordia raced out to a 5-0 lead behind Rolbiecki's serve and a pair of kills from
Ellie Sieling. The Bears' offense kept rolling from there, claiming another comfortable set win by a score of 25-18.
The match was just the third all-time meeting between the two teams, with Concordia now owning a 2-1 record against Jamestown. The Jimmies' lone victory came in 1999 as a member of the NAIA, while each of Concordia's wins occured this season in Jamestown's first year after making the jump to NCAA Division II. The win also extended Concordia's active winning streak to eight matches, with all eight wins being sweeps.
For Jamestown, Ava Mueller paced the attack with seven kills, while Gracie Adamson and Caroline Puetz added six each. Libero Momoka Minamiya led all players in the match with 18 digs, and setter Lily a Bertsch dished out 12 assists.
The Golden Bears will now return home for their final three home matches of the regular season next week as they will take on No. 11 St. Cloud State (19-5) in a non-conference match on Tuesday evening before hosting Minnesota Crookston (6-18) and MSU Moorhead (13-10) over the weekend.
